MLS Preview: St. Louis City SC (11-7-2) at Toronto FC (3-9-10)

Toronto FC has w on its last five regular-season matches against expansion sides, though Toronto FC were eliminated from the 2020 playoffs by Nashville SC in extra time. Only three expansion teams have ever won in Toronto FC: Seattle Sounders FC in 2009; New York City FC in 2015 and Los Angeles Football Club in 2018.

Toronto FC is winless in seven straight matches (D3 L4), including losing the last four in a row. This is Toronto FC’s fifth losing streak of four games or more since the start of the 2021 season after not recording a single four-plus-match losing streak in the five seasons from 2016 to 2020.

St. Louis City SC responded to a four-match winless run (D1 L3) with back-to-back wins over the San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids. The Chicago Fire (37 in 1998) are the only expansion team to have collected more points in their first 20 MLS games than St. Louis City SC’s 35 (tied with Los Angeles Football Club in 2018).

Toronto FC failed to register a shot on target in a match for the third time this season in its loss to Orlando City SC on Tuesday. The Toronto Reds FC had played a full match in regular season play without hitting a shot n target just twice in the previous 11 seasons dating back to 2012.

Tim Parker’s opening goal for St. Louis City SC on Saturday came off a corner, the league-leading 15th set-piece goal St. Louis City SC has scored this season. Nine of St. Louis City SC’s 13 goals since matchday 15 (May 27-28) have been scored on set pieces, four more than any other team in that time.
