MLS Preview: Seattle Sounders FC (10-7-5) at San Jose Earthquakes (7-7-8)

The San Jose Earthquakes have won two of its last three MLS matches against the Seattle Sounders FC (D1) after winning only on of the previous 16 league meetings (D6 L9). the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Seattle Sounders FC, 1-0, on May 31 and could defeat the Seattle Sounders FC in two straight meetings for the first time since 2015.

The San Jose Earthquakes winless streak has extended to five matches (D3 L2) with a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Football Club on Saturday. The San Jose Earthquakes earned the draw despite having Daniel becoming the first San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper to receive a straight red card since Joe Cannon against the Colorado Rapids in August 2002.

The Seattle Sounders FC overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC to earn a 3-2 win over their Cascadian rivals on Saturday. The Seattle Sounders FC had entered the weekend having lost all four league matches this season that it had trailed at halftime.

After a goal on Saturday, Cristian Espinoza is up to 10 goals this season in MLS play. Espinoza is the 19th different Argentinian player to have at least one 10-goal season in MLS play, eight more than any other country outside the U.S. (11 – Columbia).

Both of Leo Chu’s goals against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC had primary assists from Jackson Ragen and secondary assists from Nicolas Lodeiro. It was just the second time in the last 10 seasons that a goalscorer-primary-assist-secondary assist combo had multiple goals in an MLS match with Minnesota United FC’s Kevin Molino-Emanuel Reynoso-Robin Lod doing so in November 2020.
