MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake (10-8-7) at Portland Timbers (6-11-8)

Real Salt lake knocked the Portland Timbers out of the US Open Cup in the fourth round with a 4-3 win at Providence Park on May 10. Real Salt Lake has failed to win any of their previous seven visits to the Portland Timbers in all competitions (D2 L5) and have never won consecutive road matches against the Portland Timbers.

The Portland Timbers have lost four straight matches in all competitions for the first time since a run of five straight losses in March-April 2019, with three of those defeats coming at home. this is the first time the Portland Timbers have lost three consecutive home matches in all competitions since joining MLS in 2011.

Real Salt Lake has lost four of its last five matches in all competitions (W1), including the last three in a row. Real Salt Lake had lost only two of its previous 22 matches in all competitions (W13 D7) prior to losing four of the last five.

The Portland Timbers have conceded a penalty in each of their last two matches. Before the Leagues Cup break, the Portland Timbers has conceded just one penalty in their previous 50 regular-season matches dating back to mid-April 2022.

Real Salt Lake has attempted 48.0 percent of its shots from outside the box this season, the highest rate in MLS. Real Salt Lake has hit 35.0 percent of its shots from outside the box on target, second in the league (Inter Miami FC 39.0 percent) whiles its nine goals from outside the box are tied for most in the league.
