MLS Preview: Portland Timbers (7-6-12) at Toronto FC (7-12-5)

The Timbers have won their last two matches against Toronto FC, including a 2-1 victory in the last meeting, in April 2019 in Toronto. Portland had taken just one point (D1 L4) in its first five MLS visits to BMO Field before winning on its last visit.

Toronto FC’s 4-3 win at Nashville made it seven points from its last three MLS matches (W2 D1). The Reds had collected eight total points in their previous 14 league games (W2 D2 L10) dating back to mid-April.

Portland’s 1-1 draw with Dallas on Saturday took its unbeaten run to 10 straight games (W4 D6). The Timbers have had just two longer single-season streaks in club history, going 15 in a row without losing twice, first in March-June 2013 and again in April-August 2018.

Toronto FC’s Italian newcomers Federico Bernardeschi (2 goals, 2 assists) and Lorenzo Insigne (1 goal, 1 assist) have contributed to six of Toronto FC’s last seven goals, including the last three they scored against Nashville on Saturday.

Marvin Loría scored a goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time for Portland against Dallas on Saturday, only to see an equalizer scored on a Diego Chara own goal four minutes later. Since the start of the 2009 season, there have been 83 go-ahead goals scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time or later. Loría’s goal on Saturday was the only one that didn’t stand up as a match-winner.
