MLS Preview: Philadelphia Union (9-4-3) at San Jose Earthquakes (6-5-5)

Jim Curtin has never lost to the San Jose Earthquakes as the Philadelphia Union’s head coach (W4 D3). The San Jose Earthquakes are the only MLS opponent that the Philadelphia Union are undefeated against since Curtin became head coach in June 2014.

The San Jose Earthquakes last two matches have been a 0-0 draw with the Colorado Rapids and a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders FC, the team’s first consecutive shutouts since October 2020. The San Jose Earthquakes have not held their opponents scoreless in three or more straight games since a four-game streak in August 2015.

The Philadelphia Union’s 3-0 win over CF Montreal extended the team’s unbeaten streak in league play to nine consecutive games (W7 D2). that streak is tied for Philadelphia Union’s longest single-season unbeaten run in team history with a nine-game streak from last season.

Daniel made five saves in the San Jose Earthquakes 0-0 draw with the Colorado Rapids including a save on Connor Ronan’s penalty kick in the 70th minute. The Brazilian became the first San Jose Earthquakes player to save penalty in a shutout since Daniel Vega did so against the Portland Timbers in April 2019.

Julian Carranza notched his third brace in MLS play this season (and fourth in all competitions in 2023) in the Philadelphia Union’s win over the CF Montreal Impact. No other MLS player has more than two multi-goal league games this season.
