MLS Preview: Orlando City SC (2-2-2) at Minnesota United FC (3-1-2)

This will be the first meeting between Minnesota United FC and Orlando City SC since Orlando City SC won, 3-1, in the semifinals of MLS is Back in 2020. Minnesota United FC hasn’t lost any of its three regular season matches against Orlando City SC (W2 D1) with the last league encounter between the sides coming in August 2019.

Minnesota United FC suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, losing, 2-1, in Chicago after opening with three wins, all on the road, and two draws, both at home. Going back to the end of the last season, Minnesota United FC has lost only one of its last 11 home matches (W5 D5).

With two wins, two draw, Orlando City SC is on eight points after six matches for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Orlando City SC has never had fewer than eight points at this stage of a season, the only MLS team to have at least eight points after six matches of a season every year since 2015.

Kervin Arriaga scored Minnesota United FC’s lone goal Saturday on a direct free-kick; the fifth set-piece goal the Loons have scored this season out of seven total goals (71.4%). Only Houston Dynamo FC (75%) has scored a higher percentage of its goals on set plays while only CF Montreal Impact (1)has fewer open plays than the Loons (2).

Martin Ojeda has attempted 21 shots in his last three MLS matches, the most by an Orlando City SC player in a three-match span, taking at least six in each match. Only five players since 2010 have taken six or more shots in four straight MLS matches (D. De Roasrio, D. Villax2, S. Giovinco x6, K. Kamara, C. Hernandez)
