MLS Preview: New York City FC (0-1-0) at Chicago Fire (0-0-0)

Since the start of the 2018 season, New York City FC has only lost one of its last ten matches against the Fire (W7 D2) NYCFC has come out on top in each of the last three encounters, keeping a clean sheet in each of them. D. C. United was the only team to defeat the Fire in four regular-season matches in 2002-03.

The Fire are winless in a MLS-record 13 straight season opening matches (D5 8L) tracing all the way back to 2010 with the last time they took three focuses in their most memorable match coming in 2009, a 3-1 win over FC Dallas. The first two games of Chicago’s season have drawn.

For the fourth year in a row, New York City FC lost its season opener against Nashville on Saturday by a score of 2-0. In the club’s history, NYCFC has only once lost two matches in a row to begin a season, in 2020 (lost the first four).

Zherdan Shaqiri led the Fire last season with 18 goals (11 goals, 7 assists), more than Nemanja Nikolic (28) and David Accam (22) did in the Fire’s last postseason appearance in 2017.

Before its opening 2-0 defeat at Nashville this season, New York City FC failed to score in only four of their 33 MLS games, including playoffs. NYCFC last went scoreless in back to back matches in the initial two matches of last season, at the Los Angeles Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
