MLS Preview: Nashville SC (9-9-9) at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9-11-7)

Nashville and the Whitecaps drew the only meeting between the sides, 1-1, in Nashville on July 30. Nashville has a win, a draw and a loss in three visits to Canada, all of which were played in 2021.

Vancouver’s 87th minute goal to earn a point against Real Salt Lake was the ninth time it scored a tying or go-ahead goal in the 86th minute or later this season. The Whitecaps have collected an MLS-high 14 points on goals scored in the final five minutes this season.

Nashville ended a joint-club record six match winless run with a 4-0 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday. Including playoffs, Nashville has recorded consecutive wins only once in its last 40 MLS matches dating back to mid-September last year, beating the Crew and Sporting Kansas City in early April 2022.

Ryan Gauld set up Vancouver’s equalizer on Saturday, the third straight Whitecaps goal he’s been involved in (2 goals, 1 assist). Gauld has contributed to nine of the Whitecap’s last 12 MLS goals (4 goals, 5 assists) with only Sebastian Driussi and Hany Mukhtar (10 each) involved in more since that run begin in mid-July.

Hany Mukhtar had two goals and an assist in Nashville’s win on Sunday, taking him to 25 goal contributions on the year (16 goals, 9 assists), tied with Sebastian Driussi for most in the MLS. It was his fourth game with three goal contributions since the start of last season, most in MLS in that time.
