MLS Preview: Minnesota United FC (2-0-2) at St. Louis City SC (5-0-0)

In its last six encounters with expansion teams, Minnesota United FC has won four (D1 L1). The Loons have only conceded one goal in four encounters with MLS newcomers since the start of the 2020 season.

Along with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1996 and Sporting Kansas City in 201, who each won their first seven games, St. Louis City SC is the third team in MLS history to earn 15 points from its first five games. Its plus-11 goal difference is the best in MLS history at this point in a season.

For the third time in the last four seasons (also in 2020 and 2022), Minnesota United FC has gone four games unbeaten (W2 D2). The Loons have won both of their road games this season, and they might win three straight away from home for the second time in club history (June-July 2022).

Joao Klauss is the sixth player in MLS history to have scored at least one goal in each of his first five games for St. Louis City SC. He has done this in all five of the club’s games. Andy Williams was the only player to contribute to a goal in each of his first six MLS games, scoring in each of his first seven games in 1998.

In Saturday’s 1-1 matchup with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Minnesota United FC only had 37.2% possession. This season, the Loons have held possession at an average of 40.5 percent, which puts them ahead of St. Louis City SC, which has only held possession at 42.4 percent.
