MLS Preview: Los Angeles Football Club (14-10-10) at Columbus Crew SC (16-9-9)

The Los Angeles Football Club has won all three of its matches against the Columbus Crew SC by a combined score of 7-0. Three teams earned their first-ever victory over an opponent in an MLS Cup Final: Chicago Fire vs D. C. United in 1998 (L2 previously), Houston Dynamo FC vs new England Revolution in 2007 (D4, including a penalty shoot-out win in the 2006 MLS Cup Final, L1 previously) and Atlanta United FC vs Portland Timbers in 2018 (D2 previously).

Columbus Crew SC has lost only one of its last 29 home matches in all competitions dating back to early August 2022 (W20 D8), including going unbeaten in 17 straight at Lower.com Field (w13 D4). The Columbus Crew SC’s only loss in a single-leg hoe playoff match came in the 2015 MLS Cup Final against the Portland Timbers (W5 L1).

Steve Cherundolo has led the Los Angeles Football Club to MLS Cup Finals in each of his first two seasons, the third coach to reach the MLS Cup Final in his first two seasons as an MLS manager (Bruce Arenas 1996-97, Brian Schmetzer 2016-17). Chereundolo has advanced in his first six MLS Cup Playoffs rounds as only Bruce Arenas (first 8) had a longer run to begin his career.

The Columbus Crew SC is unbeaten in six straight home matches in all competitions against Western Conference opponents (W4 D2) while Los Angeles Football Club is winless in its last four away matches against Eastern Conference foes (D3 L1). The Los Angeles Football Club FC’s last road win vs the East and the Columbus Crew SC’s last home loss vs. the West came in a 2-0 Los Angeles Football Club win over the Columbus Crew SC at Lower.com Field in may 2022.
