This will be the first MLS meeting between the Earthquakes and Inter Miami. This will be Miami’s second match in California, having lost, 1-0, at Los Angeles FC in its inaugural match in March 2020.
San Jose conceded in the fifth minute of stoppage time to draw, 2-2, with Real Salt Lake on Saturday, the fifth straight match in which the Earthquakes conceded multiple goals. San Jose has conceded multiple goals in 17 of its 22 matches this season, most in the league.
Inter Miami got an equalizing goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time from Chris McVey to earn a 4-4 draw against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The eight combined goals made it the highest scoring match in Miami’s MLS history, having never played more than a six-goal game before.
Jeremy Ebobisse scored San Jose’s second goal on Saturday, taking his total to 12 goals on the season. The only Earthquakes player with more than 12 goals after 22 matches of a season was Chris Wondolowski in 2012 (17). Ariel Graziani also had 12 goals after 22 matches in 2002.
Gonzalo Higuaín scored a first-half hat-trick, the first player to do so for Miami in the club’s MLS history. Higuaín became the fourth player this season to score a hat-trick before halftime, joining Ronaldo Cisneros, Jesús Ferreira, and Lewis Morgan.
