MLS Preview: Inter Miami FC (2-1-0) at Toronto FC (0-1-2)

After losing the first match in 2020, Inter Miami FC has won five straight against Toronto FC. In MLS play, Inter Miami has won five games against Toronto—their most against any opponent—while Toronto FC has lost five in a row—their longest losing streak against any opponent (Seattle from 2010 to 2013).

In Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew SC, Toronto FC conceded a 75th-minute equalizer after scoring first. Toronto FC became the first team in MLS history to lose points in each of its first three games after leading in all three of them. However, it has failed to win any of those games.

Saturday’s match against New York City was Inter Miami FC’s first defeat of the season, falling 1-0. Since last season, Inter Miami FC has won six of its last 12 games, lost six, scored 17 times, and given up 18 goals.

In Saturday’s draw with the Columbus Crew SC, Toronto Fc was held to just seven shot attempts, its third match in a row with fewer than seven attempts. Toronto’s 18 shots up until this point this season are the least by any group in its initial three of a season something like 2010.

In his first three encounters with Toronto FC, Josef Martinez scored four goals in 2017 and 2018, but has failed to score in five subsequent encounters. Martinez has gone five games without scoring against Toronto FC, the longest scoring streak he has ever had against any team in MLS history.
