MLS Preview: FC Cincinnati (12-1-3) at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (5-5-6)

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be hosting FC Cincinnati for the first time as the Vancouver Whitecaps FC took at least one point in each of their two visits to FC Cincinnati (2-1 win in 2019, 2-2 draw in 2022). All seven goals in the fixture have been scored by different players.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC came back to earn a 1-1 home draw with Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, extending their home unbeaten streak to eight straight games in league play (W5 D3). it is the team’s longest single-season home unbeaten streak in league play since a 10-game streak to start the 2013 season.

FC Cincinnati has won 10 matches by exactly one goal this season, more than any other MLS team has total wins in 2023. FC Cincinnati has won 10 of its 13 matches decided by one goal or less this season(D3 L0 – 76.9%) while no other team has won even half its games decided by one goal or less.

Ryan Guald’s 88th-minute penalty kick goal ended a streak of 35 consecutive league games without a goal from the spot for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, the longest such drought in the team’s MLS history. Gauld also scored Vancouver’s last penalty goal prior to Saturday, a stoppage-time winner in June 2022 against Real Salt Lake.

Luciano Acosta scored his 49th goal in MLS (including playoffs) with his game winner in FC Cincinnati’s 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire. With his next goal, Acosta would become the ninth Argentinian player with 50+ goals in MLS (regular season and playoffs) with no other country outside the United States having more than four such players.
