MLS Preview: Colorado Rapids (8-9-7) at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8-11-6)

Colorado is unbeaten in its last three matches against Vancouver (W1 D2), the third time the Rapids have gone three straight matches without losing against the Whitecaps (also in 2016 and 2012-13). Colorado has never gone four straight matches against Vancouver without a loss.

The Whitecaps suffered a 5-2 defeat at the Galaxy on Saturday, the fourth time in club history they’ve allowed at least five goals in an MLS match. Three of those four games took place at Los Angeles teams (2 at LAFC, 1 at LA Galaxy).

The Rapids have lost only one of their last seven MLS matches (W3 D3) following a 1-1 draw with the Crew on Saturday. One of those wins was in Colorado’s last away match, a 5-4 victory at the Red Bulls on August 2. That win ended a 10-match road winless streak for the Rapids to start the season (D3 L7).

Goalkeeper Cody Cropper assisted on Vancouver’s first goal of the game, a Ryan Gauld strike. Cropper is the third Whitecaps goalkeeper to record a primary assist, joining David Ousted in 2014 and Brad Knighton in 2014. Knighton (2013) and Joe Cannon (2011) each had a secondary assist for the Whitecaps as well.

Diego Rubio’s penalty against the Crew on Saturday was his eighth consecutive match with a goal contribution (5 goals, 5 assists), the longest run of games with a goal involvement in the Rapids’ MLS history.
