MLS Preview: Chicago Fire (8-10-6) at Philadelphia Union (12-3-9)

Chicago dealt the Union one of their three defeats this season, a 1-0 home win on June 29. The Fire haven’t won in Philadelphia since 2013, however, failing to win in their last eight visits (D3 L5).

The Union are unbeaten in their last 17 home regular season matches (W12 D5) dating back to last September, the longest home unbeaten run in club history. Philadelphia has outscored opponents, 36-7, over those games, including 15-1 over the last three.

The Fire’s 3-2 win at Charlotte on Saturday, coupled with the 3-1 win in Vancouver on July 23, marked the first consecutive road wins for the Fire since October 2013. Chicago last posted three straight road wins in May 2009, with the third victory coming over Chivas USA in a match that featured current Union coach Jim Curtin entering as an 89th minute substitute.

Cory Burke has scored six of his 22 career MLS goals against the Fire, having not scored more than three against any other opponent. Burke didn’t score in his last two matches against the Fire, however, after finding the net each of the first five times he faced them.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s two assists against Charlotte on Saturday took him to 10 assists on the season. He’s the second Fire player in the last 10 years to record double-figure assists in a regular season after Nicolás Gaitán (12) in 2019.
