MLS Preview: Chicago Fire (3-6-8) at Portland Timbers (5-7-6)

The Portland Timbers have never lost against the Chicago Fire (W5, D5), with the last meeting ending in a 3-2 Portland Timbers home victory in 2019. The Chicago Fire has one win in 20 all-time away matches against Canadian sides (D4, L15 in all competitions), though that victory came in its last visit to the Northwest, a 3-1 win at the Vancouver Whitecaps FC last July.

The Portland Timbers played the San Jose Earthquakes to a 0-0- draw on Saturday, their fourth scoreless draw this season. Only once have the Portland Timbers had more 0-0 matches in a full regular season and that was in the team’s lone MLS Cup-winning season in 2015.

The Chicago Fire lost, 2-1, to Columbus Crew SC on a stoppage time goal from beyond the halfway line by Lucas Zelarayan in its last MLS match. The Chicago Fire has dropped an MLS-high nine points on goals scored in the 80th minute or later this season.

Zac McGraw made a team-high seven clearances against the San Jose Earthquakes and has 105 defensive clearances in the 2023 regular season. The next-most clearances by any MLS player in the 2023 regular season is 94 by FC Cincinnati’s Matt Miazga.

Xherdan Shaqiri scored an 88th-minute equalizer for the Chicago Fire against the Columbus Crew SC only to lose on a stoppage time goal. It was the second time this season that the Chicago Fire has lost a match after equalizing after the 85th minute, the first team to do so twice in a single in the last decade.
