MLS Preview: Austin FC (12-5-5) at Sporting Kansas City (5-13-5)

The three meetings between Sporting Kansas City and Austin 2021 were split, with each side winning once and drawing once. Both teams scored in all three meetings, including both in Kansas City where Sporting recorded a win and a draw.

Sporting Kansas City has lost four straight home matches in regulation for the first time in the club’s MLS history following a 2-0 loss to LAFC on Saturday. Sporting did lose five straight home matches, including a breakaway shootout loss in the fourth match of the streak, from September 1998 to April 1999.

Austin FC has collected 23 points on the road this season, tied for most in MLS (Red Bulls). Austin is unbeaten in its last five on the road (W4 D1), its longest away unbeaten run in club history and tied for the longest active streak in the league (Columbus).

Despite playing a league-high 23 games this season, Sporting is the lowest scoring team in MLS with just 19 goals. The 19 goals are five fewer than Sporting has ever had at this stage of a season before as only one team, Cincinnati in 2020 (12), has had fewer than 19 goals after 23 games over the last nine years.

Both of Sebastián Driussi’s goals against the Red Bulls on Sunday were scored from outside the box, making him the second player to score two goals from outside the box in a match this season after Lucas Zelarayán for the Crew against San Jose in March.
