MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (9-12-9) at Orlando City SC (12-11-6)

Orlando City is unbeaten in its last four home matches against Atlanta United (W2 D2)after the Five Stripes won each of their first four visits to Orlando. Orlando scored seven times in the two wins but managed just three goals in the other six games (D2 L4).

Orlando City returns home after a 5-1 defeat at the Union on Saturday where it won its last two matches. It’s been nearly two years since Orlando managed three straight home wins, last doing so in September-October 2020.

Atlanta United, coming off a 4-2 win over Toronto on Saturday, has not won consecutive matches in a year, since a run of three straight wins last September. Atlanta has not won the match following any of its previous 13 league victories (including playoffs).

Orlando City’s last two MLS goals were scored by American Kyle Smith and Andres Perea. Americans had scored just two of the Lions’ first 34 goals this MLS season (Smith & Benji Michel).

Juan Jose Purata scored a hat-trick of headers in Atlanta’s win over Toronto on Saturday, becoming the first player since at least 2010 to score three headed goals in a single MLS match. Since the start of the 2018 season, only Atlanta United as a team has scored three headed goals in two different games, both this season (also on August 28 vs D.C. United).
