MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (7-4-8) at New York Red Bulls (4-6-8)

Atlanta United FC earned its first regular-season win over the New York Red Bulls on April 1, recording a 1-0 victory at Red Bull Arena. The New York Red Bulls were unbeaten in 12 previous regular-season matches against Atlanta United FC ((W8 D4), though the Atlanta United Five Stripes FC did eliminate the New York Red Bulls in the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals.

The New York Red Bulls came from 2-0 down to draw Charlotte FC, 2-2, on Wednesday. It was the first time the New York Red Bulls avoided defeat after trailing by multiple goals in MLS since a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire in September 2015. New York Red Bulls had lost the previous 47 MLS matches (including playoffs) in which it trailed by multiple goals.

Atlanta United FC is unbeaten in seven straight MLS matches, though five of those have ended in draws (W2). After winning their first away match of the season at Charlotte FC on march 11, the Atlanta United Five Stripes FC are winless in eight straight on the road (D5 L3).

Dante Vanzeir scored his second goal of the season in the New York Red Bulls’ 2-2 draw with Charlotte FC on Wednesday, the fifth different New York Red Bulls player to score twice this season, one of three teams (Los Angeles Galaxy, Colorado Rapids) without a 3+goal scorer this season.

Nick Firmino scored a stoppage-time equalizer in his Atlanta United FC debut on Wednesday. Firmino is the fourth Atlanta United FC player to score in his MLS debut, joining Caleb Wiley, Brandon Vazquez, and Yamil Asad.
