MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (13-8-10) at Philadelphia Union (14-8-9)

Atlanta United FC defeated the Philadelphia Union, 2-0, in July, its first win over the Philadelphia Union since the 2019 playoffs, ending a run of six straight meetings in all competitions without a win (D3 L3). The Philadelphia Union have won its last three regular-season home matches against Atlanta United FC, including a 4-1 victory last season.

The Philadelphia Union’s 1-1 draw against the Columbus Crew SC on Saturday marked its fifth consecutive draw, equaling the the longest regular-season streak in club history. Only three teams have drawn six straight regular-season matches in MLS history, most recently the Chicago Fire in 2014.

Atlanta United FC has won four of its last seven matches (D2 L1) after a run of four wins in its previous 18 games in all competitions (D6 L8). Atlanta United FC has avoided defeat in three straight away matches (W1 D2), something they haven’t done in four straight on the road in 2018 (7 straight from March to June).

Kai Wagner, who is suspended due to yellow card accumulations, recorded his fifth primary assist in September in the Philadelphia Union’s 1-1 draw on Saturday, more than any other MLS player last month. Wagner’s five September assists set up goals for five different players.

Four of the 29 MLS players with at least five goal contributions since August 27 play for Atlanta United FC, including August signings Saba Lobjanidze (6) and Xande Silva (5) along with Thiago Almada (7) and Giorgos Giakoumakis (5).
