MLS Decision Day Preview: Houston Dynamo FC (13-11-90 at Portland Timbers (11-12-10)

The Houston Dynamo won their first regular-season match in Portland in 2011, but the Portland Timbers have won eight of their nine home meetings in league play since (D1) including the last six in a row. The Houston Dynamo FC did win, 2-1, in Portland in the second leg of the 2017 conference semifinals, eliminating the Portland Timbers in that tie.

After winning just five of its first 12 regular-season home matches this season (D3 L4), the Portland Timbers have won four straight at Providence Park, its longest home winning streak in league play since a 10-match run from August 2017 to June 2018.

The Houston Dynamo FC enter the final match of the season with 13 wins and 48 points, the club’s best marks in each category since 2017 (13 wins, 50 points). The last time the Houston Dynamo FC had more than 13 wins and or 50 points in a season was in 2013 (14 wins, 51 points).

The Portland Timber’s last 12 regular-season goals dating back to early September have all come from open play. Overall, 15.6 percent (7/45) of the Portland Timbers goals this season have come from set pieces, the lowest percentage in MLS in 2023.

Four Houston Dynamo FC players were involved in at least two of the teams five goals in their win over the Colorado Rapids on October 7. It marked the first time four different Houston Dynamo FC players had multiple goal contributions in a match since a 5-2 win over Sporting Kansas City in August 2020.
