TAMPA BAY RAYS NOTES:

GAME, SET, SERIES — The Rays scored four times in the opening frame en route to an 8-2 win over the Astros at Minute Maid Park on Sunday afternoon, securing a series victory in the three-game set with Houston…RF Josh Lowe (2-for-4, 2B, 3RBI, BB) delivered a two-out, bases-clearing double in the first inning before 1B Yandy Díaz (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2R, 2BB) and 2B Brandon Lowe (3-for-5, HR, 3RBI, 2R) added RBI-singles in the fourth for a 6-0 lead…the Astros got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Rays responded in the following frame with Brandon Lowe’s 13th homer of the season, a two-out, two-run shot to give Tampa Bay a commanding 8-2 lead.

RHP Zack Littell (5.0IP, 8H, 2ER, 4SO) picked up his first victory of the season after tossing a career-high 5.0 innings (prev. 4.1IP, 5/30/19 at TB) on 82 pitches, his most since 9/2/18 at Texas (83)…RHP Erasmo Ramírez (3.0IP, 2H. 0R. 2SO) made his season debut with the Rays, following Littell with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.

The Rays claimed two of three games in the weekend series, marking their first series victory over a team that entered with a .500+ record since 6/27-29 at Arizona — they had gone winless in their previous six tries (0-5-1)…it also marked their first series victory over Houston since 3/28-31, 2019, snapping a streak of six straight series losses…Tampa Bay improved to 2-4-1 overall in series play in July.

ROAD TRIPPIN’ — The Rays continue a nine-game, 10-day road trip through Houston, New York and Detroit with tonight’s series opener at Yankee Stadium…it marks their second-longest trip of the season, behind only a 10-game, 11-day swing through Baltimore, New York-AL and New York-NL from 5/8-18 (4-6)…Tampa Bay is on the tail end of a stretch of five consecutive series against clubs that are currently above the .500 mark, going 1-2-1 in sets against Texas, Baltimore, Miami and Houston (4-8 overall).

Tampa Bay has gone 3-6-4 over its last 13 series dating back to 6/12-15 at Oakland while posting a 16-24 (.400) record, fourth worst in the AL during that timeframe, ahead of only Oakland (13-27), Kansas City (14-28) and Chicago-AL (14-26)…the Rays opened the year 15-5-1 in series play (48-20 overall).

The combined winning percentage of Tampa Bay’s July opponents is .533, while its August opponents have combined for a winning percentage of .488…according to Elias, the Rays remaining opponents have the seventh-highest combined winning percentage in the majors (.515), trailing only Cleveland (.519) among AL clubs.

Tampa Bay has held a lead after six innings in only three of its 14 games since the All-Star break, winning all three contests…they have won 10 straight games when holding a lead after six innings dating back to 6/14 at Oakland, going 49-4 in such contests on the season.

The Rays have not scored more than four runs in a night game since a 15-4 win at Seattle on 6/30, a streak of 12 consecutive nighttime affairs plating four or fewer runs…it ties the longest such streak in club history (also 9/5-20, 2000).

DAWGS GOTTA EAT — Over his last five games, Brandon Lowe is 9-for-19 (.474) with three homers and 7 RBI…he is slashing .288/.373/.577 (15-for-52) with three doubles, four homers and 9 RBI since returning from the All-Star break…in his final 33 games prior to the break, he went .177/.266/.283 (20-for-113) with eight extra-base hits (2HR) and 13 RBI.

Since the All-Star break, Lowe is batting .342 (13-for-38) against offspeed/breaking pitches compared to 1-for-8 (.125) against fastballs…in the first half of the season, he hit .162 (16-for-99) against offspeed/breaking pitches and .264 (23-for-87) vs. fastballs

Among AL hitters with at least 150 pitches seen since the All-Star break, only BOS Masataka Yoshida (21.5%) and OAK Tyler Soderstrom (21.9%) have seen a lower rate of fastballs than Lowe (22.0%).

He has cut his strikeout rate from 31.3 pct. in 55 games prior to the All-Star break to 13.6 pct. in 15 games since the break, the lowest mark among Rays hitters min. 20PA) in that timeframe, ahead of Harold Ramírez (14.7%)…he did not strike out in 29 consecutive plate appearances from 7/8-21.

Lowe’s 97 career homers are eighth most in Rays history, two shy of tying Hall of Famer Fred McGriff (99HR) for seventh…the next closest hitter on the list is sixth-place Carl Crawford (104HR).

FIRST FRAME FEATS — The Rays are out-scoring opponents, 66-31 (+37), in the first inning, the second-best first-inning run differential in the majors behind Atlanta (+72)… it signals MLB’s fewest runs allowed in the opening frame while tying San Diego for the fifth-most runs scored…in its most recent series at Houston, both of Tampa Bay’s wins were keyed by multi-run opening frames (7/28 – 3R; 7/30 – 4R).

Rays pitching paces the majors in first-inning ERA (2.58), opp. batting average (.197), opp. OPS (.598) and WHIP (1.10)…Tampa Bay’s offense ranks highly in the opening frame in stolen bases (T1st, 17), total bases (3rd, 204), extra-base hits (3rd, 47), OPS (4th, .829), OBP (4th, .350) and SLG (5th, .479).

The Rays are 26-10 (.722) when scoring in the first inning compared to 38-34 (.528) in all other contests…this includes a 14-4 (.778) mark when plating multiple runs.

Randy Arozarena is slashing .353/.451/.647 (24-for-68) with 15 RBI in the opening frame, ranking among the AL’s first-inning leaders (min. 60PA) in OBP (1st), SLG (1st), OPS (1st, 1.098), AVG (2nd) and RBI (2nd)…Wander Franco’s .970 OPS ranks second in the AL behind Arozarena under the same parameters.

JUMBLED UP JULY — The Rays are 7-16 (.304) in July after entering the month with MLB’s best record at 57-28 (.671)…it ties Arizona and Chicago-AL for the worst record in the majors this month…Rays pitching has turned in a 4.55 ERA (203.2IP, 103ER) in July, sixth best in the AL, but the offense is plating an AL-worst 3.6 runs per game, better than only San Francisco (3.3) among all major league clubs…Tampa Bay is 6-5 when scoring 4+ runs this month compared to 1-11 with three or fewer runs.

The Rays rank at the bottom of the AL’s July rankings in batting average (.215), OBP (.288) and OPS (.661) while its .373 SLG is ahead of only Chicago-AL (.370).

The Rays are slashing .202/.261/.321 (34-for-168) with runners in scoring position in July; their .582 OPS in scoring situations is the worst in the majors, while their .202 average ranks ahead of only New York-AL (.195) and San Francisco (.189).

Tampa Bay’s worst winning percentage over a full calendar month is .192 (5-21), set in June 2003…the club’s worst month since becoming the Rays in 2008 was 9-16 (.360), done in both July 2015 and July 2016…with a victory tonight, the Rays would finish July with a .333 winning percentage.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — The Rays and Yankees meet for the eighth contest in a 13- game season series tonight in the Bronx…Tampa Bay holds a 4-3 edge in the season series, outscoring New York, 44-38 (+6)…six of the seven matchups have been decided by one run, including each of the last three…New York won five straight season series from 2015-19, but the Rays have taken two of the last three since 2020, going 31-24 (.564) in that span…the Rays have dropped nine of their last 14 games at Yankee Stadium dating back to 10/3/21.

TONIGHT’S STARTER: RHP TYLER GLASNOW (4-3, 3.36)
TONIGHT’S START—The righty makes his 12th start of the season in tonight’s series opener at Yankee Stadium, including his fifth on the road…has pitched to a 2.23 ERA (36.1IP, 9ER) over his last six starts since 6/25, the fourth-best mark in the AL over that span (min. 30.0IP)…leads the AL in strikeouts (88) and strikeout rate (34.8%) since making his season debut on 5/27.

LAST TIME OUT — Turned in his second straight 7.0+ inning start in a 4-1 win over Miami on 7/25 at Tropicana Field (7.0IP, 2H, ER, 2BB, 8SO)…the only run he allowed came on a wild pitch in the third inning…it marked the second time in his career he has thrown 7.0+ innings in consecutive starts (3GS – 5/26-6/8, 2021)…held the opposition to two or fewer hits in a start of 7.0+ innings for the third time in his career (last: 4/12/21 vs. TEX – 7.2IP, 2H).

PINSTRIPE PROFILE — In seven career starts against the Yankees, Glasnow is 2-2 with a 3.47 ERA (36.1IP, 14ER)…he last faced New York-AL on 6/1/21 and did not factor into the decision after working 7.0 innings, scattering three runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

Has made four starts at Yankee Stadium and is 2-0 with a 2.28 ERA (23.2IP, 6ER).

He has recorded 7+ strikeouts in five of the seven starts opposite New York-AL.

In three starts against the AL East this season, Glasnow is 0-1 with a 4.86 ERA (16.2IP, 9ER), recording 22 strikeouts against five walks while posting a .246 (16-for-65) opponent average.

GLAS IS BACK — Since allowing a season-high six runs on 6/20 vs. Baltimore, Glasnow has recorded a 2.23 ERA (36.1IP, 9ER) over his last six starts dating back to 6/25 vs. Kansas City.

During that stretch, he has recorded 55 strikeouts against just seven walks while holding opponents to a .200 (27-for-135) average.

STRIKEOUT ARTIST — Since making his season debut on 5/27, Glasnow has 88 strikeouts across 61.2 innings (12.84 SO/9.0IP)…his 88 strikeouts in that span are third most in the majors, trailing only ATL Spencer Strider and SD Blake Snell (102SO each)…he paces the AL in both strikeouts per 9.0 IP and strikeout rate (34.8%) in that timeframe (min. 50.0IP).

His 88 strikeouts are tied with Chris Archer (2017) for fourth most through a Rays pitcher’s first 11 starts of a season, trailing only himself in 2021 (98SO) and 2020 (91SO) and Shane McClanahan in 2022 (91SO).

Glasnow has struck out 6+ batters in a franchise-best 11 consecutive games to begin his season…including his final start of 2022, he has recorded 6+ SO in 12 straight starts, the third-longest streak in club history behind his own 17-start streak from 8/13/20-5/14/21 and a 13-start run by Shane McClanahan from 5/11-7/26, 2022.

Glasnow has a combined 46.0 pct. whiff rate on his breaking pitches (slider/curveball), the highest mark in the AL (min. 250 pitches swung at) and fourth highest in MLB behind Strider (57.2%), Snell (55.1%) and MIA Jesús Luzardo (50.9%).

He became the 15th fastest pitcher (by innings) to reach the 600 strikeout mark (Elias).

LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT — Right-handed batters are hitting just .159 (17-for-107) with a .476 OPS and 6 XBH against him…lefties have seen greater success against Glasnow, posting a .258 (32-for-124) AVG with 15 XBH (6HR) and an .813 OPS (.492 SLG).

LOCKED IN LATE — From the fifth inning on, Glasnow has a 1.02 ERA (17.2IP, 2ER) while holding opponents to a .159/.264/.236 (10-for-63) clip…in innings 1-4, he has a 4.30 ERA (44.0IP, 21ER) while yielding a .232/.282/.435 (39-for-168) slash line.

He has worked 5.0+ frames in each of his last six starts after doing so in only three of his first five starts of the season.

WILD THING — Glasnow has thrown a wild pitch in five consecutive starts, the longest streak by any pitcher in the majors this season.

It is tied with Blake Snell (5/29-6/19, 2018) and Brian Rose (5/4-30, 2001) for the second-longest streak in club history, trailing a seven-game stretch by Matt Moore from 7/22-9/24, 2013.
