MLB Preview: Seattle Mariners (69-55) at Chicago White Sox (49-75)

WHITE SOX AT A GLANCE
The Chicago White Sox have lost six of their last eight games and 18 of 26 as they open a seven-game homestand tonight against the Seattle Mariners.

RHP Touki Toussaint, who owns a 2.70 ERA (6 ER/20.0 IP) at home, is scheduled to start for the White Sox.

The Sox are coming off a 2-3 trip to the Cubs (1-1) and Colorado (1-2) from 8/15-20, which ended yesterday with a 10-5 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field.

Following this three-game series, the Sox conclude the homestand this weekend with four vs. Oakland (8/24-27) before taking a brief three-game trip to Baltimore (8/28-30).

The Sox went 2-4 on their last homestand vs. the Yankees (2-1) and Milwaukee (0-3) from 8/7-13.

TONIGHT’S STORYLINES
White Sox starting pitchers own a 2.94 ERA (23 ER/70.1 IP) with 87 strikeouts over the last 15 games against Seattle.

Elvis Andrus is hitting .382/.393/.600 (21-55) with six doubles, two homers, 14 RBI and seven multi-hit eff orts in his last 14 games.

Eloy Jiménez is batting .321/.357/.585 (17-53) with four home runs and eight RBI in 14 career games against the Mariners.

Tim Anderson, who will serve the fourth game of his five-game suspension tonight, is a career .388/.399/.619 (52-134) hitter with 24 runs scored in 33 games against Seattle.

Steve Stone will miss tonight’s NBC Sports Chicago telecast, with former White Sox outfielder Michael Huff working alongside Jason Benetti … the game also will air nationally on FS1, with Kevin Kugler and A.J. Pierzynski calling the game.

TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS
Prior to tonight’s series opener, the White Sox reinstated OF Eloy Jiménez from the Paternity List and optioned RHP Declan Cronin to Class AAA Charlotte.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP
The White Sox rallied for seven runs in the eighth inning and avoided a three-game sweep with a 10-5 victory at Colorado.

Andrew Vaughn hit his 16th home run in the second to give the Sox a 1-0 lead, but the Rockies took a 5-3 lead into the eighth.

Yoán Moncada started the rally with a two-run double off Matt Koch, pinch-hitter Oscar Colás hit a go-ahead, two-run double off Justin Bruihl, and Lenyn Sosa capped the seven-run frame with a three-run homer (No. 2) off Justin Lawrence.

Sosa replaced Elvis Andrus, who was ejected in the sixth … Vaughn fi nished with three hits, Andrew Benintendi was 3-5 with two runs scored, and Zach Remillard was 2-4 with a RBI.

Dylan Cease posted a ND, allowing five runs on eight hits over 4.2 IP, but three Sox relievers combined for 4.1 scoreless IP … former Rockie Bryan Shaw retired all five batters faced with three strikeouts, Aaron Bummer threw 1.1 scoreless IP for his fourth win, and rookie Gregory Santos recorded the final four outs.

The Sox recorded 14 hits, and scored 10-plus runs for the seventh time this season.

Is on pace for 43 HR, which would tie Thomas (2000) for the third-highest total in Sox history behind Belle (49 in 1998) and Jermaine Dye (44 in 2006).

BALDWIN NAMED SAL POW
Class A Winston-Salem INF/OF Brooks Baldwin has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the period of 8/14-20.

Baldwin, 23, batted .524 (11-21) with two home runs, six RBI and six runs scored over five games … a 12th-round pick in 2022, he has scored a run in 10 consecutive games.

WHITE SOX VS. SEATTLE MARINERS
The Mariners lead the season series, 2-1, after winning two of three games from 6/16-18 at T-Mobile Park … the first two games were decided by one run, while the series finale was a one-run game until the Mariners scored three in the eighth to win, 5-1.

In Chicago’s 4-3 win on 6/17, Zach Remillard became the first player in the modern era (1901-) to record both a game-tying hit and a go-ahead hit in the ninth inning or later in his MLB debut

The White Sox are hitting .213/.248/.343 with a 3.33 ERA (10 ER/27.0 IP) and have been outscored, 11-7.

The Sox went 4-2 against the Mariners in 2022 for their first season series victory since 2016.

FAMILIAR FACE
White Sox manager Pedro Grifol spent 13 seasons in the Seattle organization from 2000-12 … Grifol served as manager at Class A High Desert in 2012, guiding the Mavericks to a 83- 57 regular-season record and a berth in the California League playoff s while earning CL Manager of the Year honors.

Grifol also worked as an area scout for south Florida and Puerto Rico (2000-05), manager for Advanced Rookie Everett (2003-05), Coordinator of Instruction (2006-08) and Director of Minor League Operations (2008-11).
