SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS NOTES:

TODAY’S GAME: SF looks to snap a three-game losing streak this afternoon after dropping the last two games of the Mets series and last night’s series opener…the last time the Giants lost three in a row prior to this stretch was May 30-June 2 when they lost the last two games of the Pirates series and first game of the Orioles series here at Oracle Park…since their 10-game win streak was halted on June 22, SF has gone 4-7.

TOUGH STRETCH: During this tough 11-game stretch where SF has gone 4-7 the Giants have been outscored 56-37 (-19) while logging a .617 OPS offensively…they’ve averaged 3.4 runs per game but have done okay with runners in scoring position, posting an. 851 OPS in those spots…below is a breakdown of the Giants last 11 games versus their 10-game win streak that preceded this stretch…SF has been without a few of its key offensive contributors during this recent stretch with OFs Michael Conforto and OF Mike Yastrzemski each missing some time and now IF Thairo Estrada has hit the IL.

STRONGER COFFEE?: Since June 1 the Giants have scored 35 runs in innings 1-4, the fewest of any team in the Majors… that wasn’t so much the case in the season’s first two months as SF logged 130 runs in innings 1-4 through May 31, 10thmost in MLB…the flip side of this has been that the Giants lead the Majors in runs scored from the 5th inning on since June 1 (114)…the next closest team, Cincinnati, has 94 in that time.

A BREAKDOWN…: The Giants enter today 21-20 (.512) versus teams that are below .500, ranking 22nd among MLB clubs… against teams that are .500 or better, SF is 25-19 (.568), third-best in the Majors (team’s records are as of today to determine .500 status).

KEEP GRINDING…: Despite this tough stretch, the Giants have still been one of the best teams in baseball over the last 2+ months, posting a 35-23 record since May 1…SF’s .603 winning percentage in that stretch is the third-best in the Majors behind the Braves (39-18, .684) and D-Backs (34-22, .607)…this recent success is in large part due to the bullpen, who’s sporting a 2.88 ERA (second in MLB) with an MLB-high 266 strikeouts in that stretch.

SHAKE & BLAKE: C/OF Blake Sabol slugged two homers yesterday, the first multi-homer game of his career…the last Giants rookie catcher to have a multi-homer game prior to Sabol was C Trevor Brown, who went deep twice in Colorado on April 12, 2016…Sabol is one of eight rookies this year to reach the 10-homer mark, joining ARI’s Corbin Carroll (17), TEX’s Josh Jung (17), CIN’s Spencer Steer (14), NYM’s Francisco Álvarez (13), NYY’s Anthony Volpe (11), BAL’s Gunnar Henderson (11) and MIL’s Joey Wiemer (11)…Sabol’s 33 RBI this year tied for seventh-most among rookies.

A WINN WIN?:RHP Keaton Winn makes his second career MLB start this afternoon in what will be his fifth MLB appearance… Winn was super efficient in his first start last Thursday in Toronto, working through 6.0 innings on 67 pitches while allowing only two runs on a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. two-run homer in the 6th…the 67 pitches were the most he’d thrown in a game in the Majors or minors this season since he threw 70 in a start for Triple-A Sacramento on April 27 in Oklahoma City in
the second game of a twinbill…the 6.0 innings overall marked his longest outing of the season in the Majors or minors…the righty is still seeking his first career MLB win.

WHAT DOES HE DO? HE GETS ON BASE: C Patrick Bailey has now reached base safely in 18 consecutive games dating to June 9…his 18-game on base-streak is longest by a Giants rookie since Mike Yastrzemski also had an 18-gamer from September 6-27, 2019…below are the five most recent streaks by SF rookies including Bailey’s.

IN GOOD COMPANY: C Patrick Bailey played his 35th big league game Sunday night and his production has put him with some all-time names…according to Stats, LLC, he is one of five Giants to have 35+ hits and 25+ RBI in their first 35 games of their MLB career…Bailey is also the fourth catcher to have at least 35 hits and 25 RBI through 35 MLB games (since 1920), joining Willians Astudillo, Russell Martin and Bob Rogers.

TODAY’S STARTER – KEATON WINN RHP #67
2023 RECORD: 0-1, 3.50 ERA

WITH THE GIANTS: In his first year at the Major-League level for SF…was selected by the Giants in the fifth round (136th overall) of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Iowa Western Community College.

MEET THE ROOK: One year prior to being drafted and signing with SF, Winn was selected by the Giants in the 20th round of the 2017 MLB Draft…he opted to return to college…Winn missed two years of MiLB action, first with the 2020 season cancellation, and next by missing the entire 2021 season recovering from Tommy John surgery…he is currently the Giants’ No. 12 prospect on MLB.com.

TODAY’S GAME: Today marks Winn’s second career start, and second straight outing vs. an American League team.

LAST OUTING: Made his first career start on June 29 at Toronto, receiving his first loss as a Major Leaguer…Winn allowed just two runs, both coming on a home run by IF Vladimir Guerrero Jr., in the 2-1 defeat.

VS. SEATTLE: Today is Winn’s first career outing vs. Seattle… Winn’s last two Triple-A starts before being promoted to the Majors were against the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate, Tacoma on May 30 and June 4…the right-hander had 10 strikeouts, a 0.75 WHIP and a .115 opposing batting average across 8.0 shutout innings between the two starts.

BFFS: Winn has a 2.54 ERA (14er, 49.2ip) combined between MLB and MiLB when C Patrick Bailey is his catcher…he has 4.13 ERA (132er, 288.0ip) when throwing to a catcher other than Bailey behind the dish.
