SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS NOTES:
TODAY’S GAME: The Giants and Padres wrap this four-game series this afternoon with the Giants entering the matchup on a 10-game winning streak dating to June 11…it’s SF’s longest winning streak since a 10-game winning streak from May 20- 31, 2004…the Giants 10-game winning streak is the second-longest active win streak in the Majors behind Cincinnati’s active 11-gamer…for reference, SF’s last 11-game win streak within a single season came May 29-June 9, 1998.
FLOAT ON…: SF has won 10 in a row, and 25 of its last 34 games (.735) dating to May 15…the .735 winning percentage is the best in MLB over that stretch…during this 10-game winning streak, the Giants have a +49 run differential (80-31).
STREAKS OF COLOR: The Giants current 10-game winning streak marks the eighth time in the SF-era (1958-pres.) that the Giants have rattled off a winning streak of at least 10 games within a single season
ELEVENSIES: SF enters today 10 games over .500 at 42-32, matching their highwater mark from all of last season…the last time the Giants were more than 10 games over .500 was at the end of the 2021 campaign.
LIFE COMES AT YOU FAST: At 42-32 (.568), the Giants now have the third-best record in the National League behind Atlanta (47-26, .644) and Arizona (45-30, .600)…SF’s .568 winning percentage is sixth-best in the Majors overall.
THAT’S MORE LIKE IT: With last night’s win the Giants secured a series win here at home for the first time in a month since they took two of three from Miami from May 19-21…they had lost three straight series to Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Chicago-NL here at home entering this series…SF has swept one series at home this season, a three gamer vs. Philadelphia from May 15-17…the last time the Giants were able to sweep a four-game series here at home was June 15-18, 2021 vs. Arizona.
THE MEMORY REMAINS…: SF has a chance to sweep a four-game series from the Padres with a win this afternoon…if they’re able to do it it would be the first time since September 24-27, 1993 at Candlestick Park that the Giants were able to sweep a four-game set from the Padres here in San Francisco… the Giants last swept the Padres in a four-game series overall in San Diego from August 14-17, 2006 at Petco Park.
THE ROOKS: Using Fangraphs WAR, SF’s rookies this year have been worth 2.3 Wins Above Replacement as we enter play today…much of that has come on the offensive side of the ball where the Giants rookies have been worth 2.0 fWAR, sixth-most in the Majors…the rookie hurlers have been worth 0.3 fWAR to this point…in terms of defense, the Giants rookie class ranks third in terms of Fangraphs’ Defensive Runs Above Average Metric (Def) at 11.1, which measures a player’s defensive value relative to league average.
IN PLAY (RUNS): OF Luis Matos has scored 10 runs in his first seven Major League games entering play tonight…that’s the most by any Giant through their first seven games in team history since at least 1901.
THE LEFT BANK: The Giants draw Padres lefty Blake Snell is today’s finale…SF has won four straight games when facing a lefty starter and 10 of their last 11 games vs. a LHSP…overall, the Giants are 12-6 vs. lefty starters this season…the Giants have had trouble with Snell historically as he owns a 2.51 ERA (9er, 32.1ip) in six starts against the Giants…SF, however, is 3-3 vs. the Padres in the six games Snell has started.
TRENDING UP: SF’s .727 team OPS vs. lefties is 18th-best in the Majors entering play today but it has been much better than that since May 1…since that day, the Giants have an .804 OPS vs. lefties, sixth-best in the Majors in that time.
BULLS ON PARADE: The SF bullpen has been one of the best in MLB over the last month…since May 22, Giants relievers are 11-2 with an MLB-best 1.75 ERA (27er, 138.2ip), 154 strikeouts 13 saves and 0.91 WHIP…the Giants ‘pen has allowed six homers in that stretch, tied for second-fewest in the Majors.
DOUBLE DIGITS: The Giants ‘pen has now racked up 10 wins this month…the last time SF’s pen had double-digit wins in a single month was September of 2021 when they had 16.
TODAY’S STARTER – ALEX WOOD LHP #57
2023 RECORD: 2-1, 4.11 ERA
WITH THE GIANTS: In his third year with SF…signed a two-year, $25 million contract with San Francisco in the 2021-2022 offseason after a strong performance on a one-year deal in 2021.
TODAY’S GAME: Today marks Wood’s second start in his return from his second trip to the injured list (low back strain)…in his last start at Oracle Park, May 31, he suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks in 4.1 innings to Pittsburgh.
LAST START: Wood spun his second shutout effort of the season, striking out four Dodgers while allowing three hits, one hit-by-pitch and zero walks over 5.0 innings…walks were burning Wood prior to last start as he totaled eight in his last 10.0 innings before the low back strain forced him to the IL.
VS. SAN DIEGO: Wood has solid numbers vs. the Padres in his career, yet has struggled facing San Diego at Oracle Park…the lefty has a 3.14 ERA (32er, 91.2ip) in 21 career games (15 starts) with 97 strikeouts and a 1.12 WHIP…Wood has faced SD three times at Oracle Park during his Giants tenure, all coming in 2022, going 0-2 with an 8.25 ERA (11er, 12.0ip), 15 strikeouts and a 1.83 WHIP… SD IF/OF Matt Carpenter, who is a lefty and might not start in the likely right-handed heavy lineup, is 3-for-8 (.375) against Wood with a double, home run and two walks.
INJURIES (X2): Wood has missed a total of 35 games with two injuries this season…he was first out for 21 games from April 19- May 12 with a left hamstring strain sustained on April 18 at Miami…Wood missed another 14 games from June 1-17 with a low back strain.
THANKS, GUYS: The offense has shown out when Wood takes the hill…his 43 runs of support are the fifth-most for a Giants starter through their first eight starts since 1974 (Stats, LLC)…Stats, LLC goes on to note that SF is averaging 11.31 runs of support per 9.0 innings this season when Wood starts…the highest run support per 9.0 innings for the Giants in the last 50 seasons is 8.65 for LHP Shawn Estes in 2000 (min. 10 starts).
