SAN DIEGO PADRES NOTES:

Padres drop series in New York with Sunday’s 10-7 loss, have off day yesterday

  • On Sunday’s rubber game, the Padres fell 10-7 to the Yankees, dropping the 3-game series…starter Yu Darvish got the loss after going just 2.2 innings and allowing 7 runs (all earned).
  • Jake Cronenworth and Rougned Odor both homered, and Trent Grisham added a double…however, the Padre offense went 5-for-30 overall and 1-for-7 with RISP (the Yankees went 7-for-10 with RISP)…San Diego pitchers’ 7 hits allowed with RISP were a season high in a game this year.

Padres have lost 6 of their last 7 series

  • San Diego snapped their 5 series losing streak in their 1st series this roadtrip against the Nationals, but after losing Sunday’s rubber game against the Yankees, they’ve now lost 6 of their last 7 series…per Elias, it’s the 1st time the Friars have lost 6+ series in any 7-series span in a season since September 10-October 3, 2021…the Padres haven’t won a series in Miami since 2018.

Roster Move: Padres claim catcher Gary Sánchez off waivers from Mets

  • Yesterday, the Padres claimed catcher Gary Sánchez off waivers from the New York Mets…today, he was added to the Major League roster, and in a corresponding move, catcher Brett Sullivan was optioned to Triple-A El Paso…Sánchez will wear No. 99, becoming the 1st Padre to darn the number.

Every run counts

  • This year, the Marlins lead the Majors in 1-run wins with a 15-4 record (.789)…since the year 1900, the best record in 1-run games over the course of a season was posted by the 2016 Rangers (36-11, .766)… meanwhile, the Padres’ 3-9 record (.250) in 1-run games is the 2nd-lowest winning percentage in such games of any team, ahead of just the Cubs (3-10, .231), per Sportstrader.

Walk rate: compare & contrast

  • The Friars have MLB’s highest walk rate so far this season at 11.3%, while the Marlins have the 2ndlowest walk rate at 7.2%, ahead of just the White Sox’s 6.5%…Juan Soto’s 50 walks lead all of baseball.

Extra, Extra!

  • The Padres are 1 of only 4 clubs to have 40 percent-or-more of their hits go for extra bases, while 70 percent of the Marlins’ hits have been singles…the Padres have a 40.2% extra-base hit percentage (4th highest in MLB), and the Marlins have a 30.0% XBH percentage…they’re ahead of just the Nationals’ 28.1%.
