The Guardians posted their first walk-off win of 2023 in Sunday afternoon’s series finale against Seattle, rallying for a 7-6 victory across 12 innings at Progressive Field…club is coming off a 5-2 road trip thru Seattle (3-1) and Oakland (2-1) to start the season… Cleveland (6-4) has won 6 of last 9 and holds sole possession of 2nd-place in the AL Central standings, one half-game behind Minnesota (6-3).

The wild back-and-forth finish saw the two clubs combine for 10 runs after the conclusion of the 8th inning, as Cleveland posted three separate two-run rallies to knot the score in the 9th and 11th frames ahead of the club’s game-winning sequence in the 12th that included JOSH NAYLOR’s RBI-groundout and JOSH BELL’s game-winning fielder’s choice to plate JOSÉ RAMÍREZ, who drove in the Guardians’ first tally with a 1st-inning sac fly after Cal Raliegh gave Seattle an early 2-0 lift with a two-run shot in the 1st…both offenses would be held scoreless across innings 2-8… WILL BRENNAN sent the game to extras with his two-out, two-run double in the 9th and followed ANDRÉS GIMÉNEZ’s RBI-double in the 11th with his third RBI on a single.

ZACH PLESAC rebounded from the 1st-inning damage to turn in a 7.0-inning quality start (7.0IP, 5H, 2R-ER, 1BB, 6SO, 1HR, 91 pitches) opposite Mariners starter George Kirby (6.0IP, 5H, 1R-ER, 0BB, 4SO, 96 pitches)…the 3-hour, 48-minute contest featured 14 pitchers, 5 wild pitches and 6 intentional walks.

Bieber’s slider has been working for him through his first two starts, holding hitters to a .190 average (4-for-21) with 7 of his 10 strikeouts coming by way of the pitch…in 2022, his most effective pitches were his slider and curveball, both of which held hitters to a .191 batting average…nearly 85% of sliders thrown (718/849) were to righthanded batters, and over 85% of curveballs thrown (439/514) were to left-handed batters.

LEADING THE LAND
Bieber led Cleveland’s starting rotation in ERA (2.88), innings pitched (200.0), and strikeouts (198) in his 31 starts during the 2022 season…he became the first Cleveland pitcher since Sam McDowell 1964-66, 1968-70) with multiple qualified seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA before age 28.

Among 2022 AL pitching leaders, Bieber ranked 1st in fewest-pitches-per-IP (14.4), 3rd in innings pitched (200.0), 5th in walk rate (4.6%), 6th in strikeouts (198), 6th in whiff rate (29.7%), 7th in ERA (2.88), 7th in WHIP (1.04), 9th in opposing batting average (.230) and 9th in strikeout rate (25.0%).
