LOS ANGELES DODGERS NOTES:

WHO’S IT GONNA BE?: The Dodgers lost to the Yankees yesterday, 6-3, and today on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball the club will look to win its sixth consecutive series at home in the rubber match with New York. Today’s contest closes out the homestand (3-2) as the Boys in Blue look to win their first series over the Yankees at Dodger Stadium since taking two of three from them June 18-20, 2004. This weekend marks just the fifth time the Yanks have come to Chavez Ravine in the regular season. Of course, the two squads met 11 times in the World Series from 1941-81 with Dodger Stadium involved in four of them (1963, 1977-78, ’81). Following tomorrow’s travel day to Cincinnati, Los Angeles will begin a six-game road trip against the Reds Tuesday night with the first of a three-game set. Following Thursday’s finale with the Red Legs, the club will head to Philadelphia for a three-game series with the Phillies that starts on Friday night, June 9. Los Angeles (.593) and Arizona are tied atop the NL West and co-own the best record in the National League and the fifth-best mark in the big leagues, trailing Tampa Bay (.683), Texas (.649), Baltimore (.621) and Houston (.603). The Dodgers have the best home record in the National League (20-9, .690) and have won 14 of their last 17 contests at the Ravine.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: The Dodgers fell behind early and then went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position on their way to a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Yankees. Michael Grove made his first start since April 20 and gave up four runs on four hits in 5.0 innings while striking out a season high seven hitters. Unfortunately, two of those hits were home runs by Jake Bauers and Grove fell to 0-2 on the season. At the plate, Miguel Rojas went 2-for-4 with an RBI, giving him four multi-hit games in his last 10 contests. Max Muncy cracked his 18th homer of the season on Friday night, which ranks third in the Majors, trailing just Pete Alonso (20) and Aaron Judge (18). Last night, Muncy’s Dodger season high streak of five consecutive games with an RBI was snapped. The Dodgers lead the National League in runs per game (5.59), runs scored (330), home runs (100), extra-base hits (221), slugging percentage (.462) and walks (251).

BOBBY BALL: Dodger rookie right-hander Bobby Miller will make his third-career start on Sunday Night Baseball vs. the Yankees. Miller has won both of his starts and today will look to become the first Dodger rookie since Kazuhisa Ishii to win each of his first three Major League starts. Ishii would win his first six. The last homegrown Dodger pitcher to win his first three big league starts was Fernando Valenzuela, who ripped off eight-in-a-row in 1981 on his way to the Cy Young Award and a World Series title over the Yankees.

RIVALRY RESTARTED: The Dodgers and Yankees met Friday night for the first time since August 2019 and the clubs have met just 18 times since the start of Interleague play in 1997, with each team winning nine games apiece. The Yankees took two of three from the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in that 2019 three-game series and overall Los Angeles is 6-7 vs. the Bronx Bombers at Chavez Ravine.

INTERLEAGUING: The Dodgers are 4-4 in interleague play this season after going 15-5 last year against the other league, including a 7-3 record at home. Since the start of the 2019 season, Los Angeles is 57-31 in interleague play and their .648 winning percentage in that span is second best in the Majors, trailing only the Tampa Bay Rays, who have a .673 Interleague winning percentage in that span.

LOCKED IN: Dodger designated hitter J.D. Martinez went 0-for-4 yesterday and was robbed of an extra-base hit in his final at-bat by Aaron Judge. The 0-fer ends Martinez’s hitting streak at 16 games, but he has been on fire since returning from the injured list on May 12, hitting safely in 18 of 20 games while batting .305 (25-for-82) with four doubles, nine homers and a Major League leading 25 RBI during that span.

THE GLUE: Dodger catcher Will Smith went 1-for-4 yesterday and is hitting .375 (12-for-32) with a .474 on-base percentage in his last nine games. The Dodgers are 26-14 (.650) when the All-Star hopeful has appeared in a game and 26-11 (.703) when he starts.

GET HIM TO SEATTLE: Dodger first baseman Freddie Freeman went 1-for-5 yesterday, one day after seeing his Dodger season-high 20-game hitting
streak snapped. Freeman, who was named Major League Baseball’s Player of the Month for May in the NL, hit .457 (37-for-81) with five homers, 11 doubles, one triple, 21 RBI and 20 runs scored during the streak. He ranks third in the Major Leagues with 49 runs scored, trailing Marcus Semien (53) and Ronald Acuna Jr. (50). Freeman leads the Major Leagues with 23 doubles, 34 extra-base hits and 135 total bases while ranking second in hits (80) and batting average (.336).

IT’S SHOWTIME!: The Dodgers would like to wish a very happy birthday to right-handed reliever Yency Almonte, who turns 29 today! Almonte is in his second year with the Dodgers and is 3-0 with a 6.75 ERA. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last six games (6.0 IP), allowing just one hit and striking out seven in that span. The Miami native spent his first four big league season with the Colorado Rockies, where he made 120 relief appearances.

LONG BALLS: The Dodgers didn’t homer yesterday and still rank second in the Majors with 100 home runs, trailing only the Tampa Bay Rays (103). Los Angeles recorded their 18th 3+ homer game Friday night, which leads the Majors. The Dodgers also rank second in the Majors with 47 games with at least one homer, behind the Rays (49), who have homered in all but 11 games this season
