SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS NOTES:

TODAY’S GAME: The Giants look to break their two-game skid with a win this afternoon…the matchup is the third of an eight-game homestand, the longest for SF this season…after the Mets leave town on Sunday, the Giants will take on the St. Louis Cardinals from Monday-Thursday.

FIRST TIME SINCE WHEN?: The Giants’ 6-13 record is tied for their worst start through 19 games in franchise history, with the last time being in 2017…the 1951 New York Giants started 6-13 and finished 98-59 after going 50-12 to end the season en route to taking the NL Pennant…a loss today would keep the Giants on pace with the 1972, 1980 and 1983 SF Giants.

HOMECOMING: Today marks the first home start for RHP Logan Webb since he signed a five-year, $90 million extension with SF on April 14 while the team was in Detroit…Webb fell in his last start on April 17 at Miami when a late pinch-hit home run by Jorge Soler gave the Marlins a 7th-inning 4-3 lead…Webb has been a workhorse for the Giants, totaling the second-most innings in the Majors since July 9, 2021 (trailing only Cy Young RHP Sandy Alcántara’s 342.1).

Most innings in MLB since July 9, 2021
Player Innings
Sandy Alcántara (MIA) 342.1
Logan Webb (SF) 315.1
Aaron Nola (PHI) 312.2
Player Innings
Framber Valdez 310.2
Gerrit Cole (NYY) 305.1
Corbin Burnes (MIL) 304.0

ANOTHER ONE?: The Giants face LHP David Peterson this afternoon, the eighth lefty they’ve faced in their last 12 games…lefties have been a tough draw for the Giants as their platooned lineup is batting .205, which ranks 25th in MLB, and has a .574 OPS, which is 29th…righties have a strong .306 batting average (19-for-62), two homers and .816 OPS vs. Peterson, but lefties have actually fared better with a .333 average (7-for-21), three home runs and 1.250 OPS.

SLIDE TO THE LEFT: Speaking of Peterson, the key to the game is his slider…Per Sports Info Solutions, opponents hit .175 against his slider last year, and are 11-for-27 (.407) this year…the Giants are near the top of the league in hitting right-handed sliders, with a .276 average (third in Majors) and an MLB-leading .586 slugging percentage…yet like they have against most lefty pitching, the Giants have struggled
against southpaw sliders with a .172 average (22nd) and .372 slugging percentage (16th).

HOT CORNER: Per SIS, the .983 OPS by SF third basemen is the second best in MLB, trailing only the Blue Jays…IF David Villar is 6-for-21 .(286) with three home runs, seven RBI and a 1.114 OPS as a third baseman compared to his 4-for-31 (.129) output at a second baseman…IF J.D. Davis is 15-for-49 (.306) with four home runs, 13 RBI and a .932 OPS on the hot corner…IF Wilmer Flores is 1-for-4 (.250) with a run, a walk,
a double and an RBI.

REHAB UPDATE: Two of the Giants best right-handed bats, OF Mitch Haniger and OF Austin Slater, are close to returning to the lineup…Haniger was 0-for-2 with an RBI last night…he is 3-for-9 with a home run and two RBI for Sacramento…in 2021, Haniger’s last healthy season (157 games), he tied for fourth in MLB with 16 big flies vs. lefties…Slater had Friday off, but is 5-for-15 (.333) with five runs, a double, a home run, six RBI and a 1.044 OPS in six games for Sacramento (one in center field, five at designated hitter)…since 2020, Slater’s OPS vs lefties is eighth-best in the NL.

DAY MAN, FIGHTER OF THE NIGHT MAN: The Giants have performed much better in day games this season, going 5-6 compared to their 1-7 night record…Giants pitchers have a 3.82 ERA in day games compared to their 5.53 ERA in night games…offensively, SF has a .775 OPS in day games (seventh in MLB) against their .657 OPS in night games (27th).

WATCHING IT FLY: Giants pitching staff has allowed 27 home runs in 19 games…the 27 homers are tied for third-most in the NL…last season, it took Giants pitchers 38 games to give up that many home runs.

NO DICE: The Giants were held scoreless for the third time this season, and third time by a New York team as the Yankees shut out the Giants twice in the opening three game series…it took until June 2 for the Giants to be shut out for a third time in 2022…seven other teams have been shutout at least thrice this year, with Washington, San Diego and Oakland all doing so four times, and Kansas City five times.

LATE RUNS: SF has allowed 44 runs in the 7th-or-later, which ranks as the third-most runs allowed in the Majors behind the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox (both with 46).

UNLUCKY 7: Early runs have been key as SF is 1-11 when trailing after the 6th…conversely, when leading after the 7th, the Giants have a 4-2 record, and when tied they are 1-0. Runs allowed in the 7th inning or later – MLB

Team Runs in 7th Inning or Greater
Athletics 46
White Sox 46
Giants 44

Team Runs in 7th Inning or Greater
Royals 36
Astros 35
Two tied with 34

THAT HURTS: SF is third in MLB, second in the NL, with 14 errors…the Giants had a -9 DRS, which is 26th in baseball… SF catchers have an MLB-leading five errors, three being catcher’s interferences by C/OF Blake Sabol.

TODAY’S STARTER – LOGAN WEBB RHP #62
2023 RECORD: 0-4, 4.94 ERA

WITH THE GIANTS: Is in the midst of his fifth season with SF…made his fourth career Opening Day roster and his second consecutive Opening Day start with his outing on March 30 at the Yankees… signed a five-year, $90 million extension on April 14 that keeps him in a Giants uniform through 2028…the contract bought out his final two arbitration years and first three years of free agency.

LAST TIME OUT: Was in the midst of a solid start last time out in Miami on Monday, having allowed two runs through six innings with SF leading 3-2…in the 7th inning, Webb gave up a pair of singles to start the inning but got a huge double play to get the first two outs of the inning and was seemingly going to wiggle out of the jam… pinch hitter Jorge Soler, who was previously 0-for-10 off Webb with seven strikeouts, homered on a mistake pitch from Webb that gave Miami a lead they wouldn’t give back.

VS. NEW YORK-NL: Faces off against the Mets for the fourth time in his career and third time here at Oracle Park…he’s fared much better against the Metropolitans here at home (4er, 12.1ip) in two starts than he did in his lone start at Citi Field last April…SF has won both of his starts against the Mets at Oracle Park in his career with the most recent coming last May (5.0ip, 5h, 2r, 2er).

LOGAN’S WEBB: Over the last 2+ seasons as Webb has come into his own, the Giants as a team are 39-23 (.629) in games that he has started since 2021…however, SF has lost each of Webb’s starts this season and 8-of-his-last-12 dating to August 18, 2022.

THE AIR UP THERE…: Webb has allowed multiple homers in two of his four outings this season after doing so just one time all of 2022… last season, Webb’s 0.51 HR/9ip was the fourth-lowest in the Majors behind José Quintana (0.43), Framber Valdez (0.49) and Martín Pérez 0.50)…Webb allowed 11 homers in 192.1 innings in 2022 and has allowed four in 17.0 so far in 2023.

THAT’S STRIKEOUTS WITH A K: The righty has whiffed 28 batters in 23.2 innings so far in 2023 (10.65 K/9ip)…for reference, Webb’s highest K/9 of his career came in his breakout 2021 season where he averaged 9.6 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

CHANGELING…: Through his first four starts opponents are hitting .344 with a .563 slugging % off his changeup in 2023… last season, they batted .204 with a .286 slugging %…during his breakout 2021 season, opponents had a .263 average with a .365 slugging % off the changeup.

GOOD VIBES ONLY: Webb’s 12 punchouts set the franchise record for most strikeouts on Opening Day, surpassing the 11-strikeout effort from Madison Bumgarner on April 2, 2017 at Arizona…the 12 strikeouts on Opening Day were also tied for 10th-most by any pitcher in MLB history on Opening Day… it was Webb’s fourth career 10+ strikeout game.
