MLB Preview: Minnesota Twins (11-7) at Boston Red Sox (9-10)

MINNESOTA TWINS NOTES:

THE TWINS: Have gone 3-3 through six games on their seven-game, eight-day roadtrip, going 2-2 at Yankee Stadium over the weekend, followed by a 1-1 split of the first two games at Fenway Park this week…today, the Twins will complete the trip with the three-game series finale in Boston…after today’s game, the Twins will travel back to Minneapolis to begin a 10- game homestand with three games against the Nationals over the weekend, followed by three games against the Yankees (April 24-26) and four games against the Royals (April 27-30).

Twins are seeking their second winning roadtrip this season, going 4-2 in their previous trip to open the season (3-0 at KC and 1-2 at MIA).

TWINS BREAK OUT THE BATS IN BOSTON: The Twins beat the Red Sox last night at Fenway Park by a score of 10-4, evening this three-game series…Joe Ryan (4-0) was the starter and winner, allowing three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched…he joined Gerrit Cole and Shane McClanahan as the only pitchers in baseball with four wins…Brent Headrick made his major league debut, pitching 3.0 innings with one run allowed on one hit…the offense recorded nine hits as Edouard Julien went 3-for-4 with his second home run…Joey Gallo made his return from the IL, hitting his team-leading fourth home run, a three-run jimmy jack in the third inning.

Headrick became the third pitcher in Twins history (since 1961) to earn a save in their debut, joining Micheal Nakamura (6/7/03) and Steve Barber (4/9/70)…Headrick earned the trifecta last night as manager Rocco Baldelli presented him with three game balls postgame: One for his debut, one for his first strikeout (Enmanuel Valdez) and one for the save.

GETTING OFFENSIVE: The Twins recorded nine hits last night, five going for extra-bases, while only striking out six times…since their 13-hit, nine-extra-base-hit and 11-run game to start this roadtrip (April 13 at NYY), they had just 4.5 hits-per-game, 2.3 runs-per-game and 48
strikeouts in four games until last night.

LOVE THAT DIRTY WATER: The Twins and Red Sox are playing the third of seven games in 2023… after this series, the Twins will host the Sox for four games at Target Field from June 19-22… the Twins have won four of their last six games against the Sox, dating back to April 2022.

CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT: The Twins bullpen has combined to go 3-2, 2.77 ERA (55.1 IP, 17 ER) with 17 walks, 59 strikeouts, a .193 opponent batting average and a .579 opponent OPS…they rank fifth among all bullpens in baseball in ERA, and third in opponent batting average and OPS.

The Twins’ bullpen has averaged 88.9 mph, the fifth-highest average pitch velocity in the AL and eighth-highest in baseball.

Hawkins pitched in 15 career games at Fenway…his first career game in this ballpark came on May 6, 1998 as the Twins won 8-7… Hawk earned the victory, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings pitched with one walk and one strikeout…it marked his fifth career road win…Paul Molitor, David Oritz and Torii Hunter were all in the lineup for the Twins that day.

Perkins made his major league debut at Fenway on September 21, 2006, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings with no hits allowed, no walks and one strikeout in a Twins 6-0 defeat…10 of Perk’s 11 career appearances here were scoreless, while he struck out 16 batters in 11.2 innings.
