MLB Preview: Miami Marlins (12-12) at Atlanta Braves (16-8)

ATLANTA BRAVES NOTES:

TONIGHT’S GAME: The Braves and Marlins tonight continue a four-game series in what is the third of 13 games between the teams this season…The two will meet again just five days after the conclusion of this series, May 2 in Miami.

• The Braves beat the Marlins, 7-4, last night and have taken each of the first two games of this series.

• Atlanta went 13-6 against Miami last season, including wins in nine of their final 11 games between the clubs…The Braves beat Miami, 2-1,
on October 4 in the penultimate game of the season to clinch the NL East division title.

• Atlanta has won the season set against Miami for eight consecutive years, dating to 2015…Moreover, the Braves have won double-digit games over the Marlins in 17 of the last 19 full seasons…They went 9-10 in 2014 and 8-10 in 2009…Since 2015, the Braves are 93-51 (.646) against Miami.

• Since Truist Park opened in 2017, Atlanta has played to a 39-17 (.696) record against Miami in this building…The Marlins’ .304 winning
percentage in that span is second lowest in baseball among teams with at least five games played here, better than just Pittsburgh (4-15, .211).

• RH Bryce Elder has made four career starts against Miami, his most against any single team, and is 0-2 in these games despite a 2.78 ERA (7
ER/22.2 IP)…The 6-foot-2, 225-pound right-hander fanned a career-most 10 batters against Miami on August 14 of last season at loanDepot
park, allowing one run over 7.0 innings in the only double-digit strikeout game of his career.

• RH Sandy Alcantara has made 10 career starts against Atlanta, compiling a 4-2 record with a 2.42 ERA (18 ER/67.0 IP)…In three starts against Atlanta last season he went 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA, including a complete game on May 22, on his way to the 2022 N.L. Cy Young award…In four starts this season, the 6-foot-5, 200-pound native of the Dominican Republic is 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA (15 ER/24.2 IP).

WIN: Atlanta beat Miami, 7-4, last night to win the its second consecutive games after snapping a season high-tying four-game losing streak the night prior…Five of Atlanta’s 10 hits went for extra bases.

• Atlanta’s win, coupled with Pittsburgh’s loss to Los Angeles, gives the Braves a share of the best record in the National League…The Pirates are also 16-8 (.667)…Just one team in baseball, Tampa Bay, has a better record than Atlanta…The Rays are 20-4 (.833).

• DH Eddie Rosario and 2B Ozzie Albies combined to hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning, the third time this season the Braves have
gone back-to-back, and the first time since April 14 at Kansas City.

• Atlanta’s three sets of back-to-back homers are tied for the major-league lead, even with five other clubs.

ROTATION: RH Charlie Morton pitched 7.0 one-run innings last night to earn the win, and Braves’ starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of their last 12 starts dating to April 12 vs. Cincinnati.

• In that span, Atlanta starters have pitched to an 8-4 record and a 1.88 ERA, allowing just 15 earned runs in 71.2 innings…Opponents are batting just .201, and have struck out 77 times.

• Atlanta’s current rotation of Max Fried, Spencer Strider, Charlie Morton, Kyle Wright and Bryce Elder have combined to go 9-3 with a 2.26 ERA (28 ER/111.2 IP), and the Braves are 15-5 (.750) in their starts.

• Among pitchers with at least three starts this season, Fried ranks first in the N.L. with a 0.60 ERA, Elder ranks second with a 1.14 ERA, Strider is tied for fourth with a 1.80 ERA, and Morton ranks 14th with a 2.76 mark…Wright led the majors with 21 wins last season.

• The Braves’ current 12-game streak of three earned runs or less by its starters is the longest such streak for Atlanta since also doing so in 12 straight games last year, from July 1 to July 12, and the second longest such run in the majors this season…Pittsburgh starters did so in 13 straight starts from April 11 to April 23.

OZZIE ALBIES: Hit solo home runs in both the sixth inning and eighth innings last night, his eighth career multi-home run game, and his first since June 30, 2021 versus the New York Mets.

• Albies has 17 RBI in 10 games since the start of play on April 15, most in Major League Baseball.

WINS VERSUS MIAMI: Last night’s victory over Miami marked the 301st win for Atlanta over the Marlins since the club was founded in 1993…Atlanta is 301-201 (.599) all-time against the franchise.

• Atlanta’s 301 wins versus Miami since the start of 1993 are its most against any one team in baseball…The Braves have 285 wins against the Nationals, 281 wins versus the Mets and 264 wins against Philadelphia in that span.

• Since 1993, only one MLB club has beaten another club more times than Atlanta has beaten Miami…The New York Yankees have beaten the Baltimore Orioles 310 times since that year.

ROSTER MOVES: The Braves today placed RHP Joe Jimenez on the paternity list and recalled LHP Danny Young to Atlanta…Additionally, OF Michael Harris II tonight begins a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett.

• Young has pitched in four games for Atlanta this season, allowing just one earned run in 3.2 innings.

• Harris II has been on the injured list since April 7 with a strained lower back, missing Atlanta’s last 17 games.
