MLB Preview: Los Angeles Angels (14-14) at Milwaukee Brewers (18-9)

LOS ANGELES ANGELS NOTES:

LEADING OFF: Today, the Angels play the third (0- 2) of six games on a road trip against the Milwaukee Brewers (0-2; April 28-30) and St. Louis Cardinals (May 2-4)…Halos went 5-2 on last homestand against Kansas City (2-1) and Oakland (3-1)…LAA was 2-5 on last road trip against the Boston Red Sox (1-3) and New York Yankees (1-2).

VS. MILWAUKEE: Today is the final game for the Angels against Milwaukee this season (0-2)…Halos are looking to avoid being swept in a three-game series by Brewers for the first time since May 9-11, 1997 (at County Stadium) in Milwaukee’s final season in the American League…This series represents first meeting between the teams since April 8-10, 2019, when the Angels swept a three game set at Angel Stadium…This is Halos first visit to American Family Field since May 2-4, 2016 (Brewers won two of three games).

FAMILIAR FACES: Several members of the Angels have previously been members of the Brewers…Hunter Renfroe played in 125 games for Milwaukee last season and totaled 29 home runs…Brett Phillips made his MLB Debut with the Brewers in 2017 and played in 52 games across parts of two seasons in Milwaukee… Bench Coach Ray Montgomery spent 10 seasons across two stints (2007-10, 2015-20) with the Brewers in a variety of Baseball Operations positions.

.500 AGAIN: With a 14-14 record, Halos are back at the .500 mark for a ninth time this season (also, 1-1, 5-5, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11 and 12-12).

MULTI-HR MIKE: Last night, Mike Trout extended his franchise record with his 25th career multi-HR game (first this season)…First time in career homering in consecutive innings (HR in 8th and 9th innings last night).

RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Yesterday, the Angels selected the contract of RHP Chris Devenski…A Southern California native, Devenski has made seven appearances for Triple-A Salt Lake this year, allowing four earned runs across 9.0 innings of work…In corresponding moves, LHP José Quijada (left elbow inflammation) was placed on the 15-day injured list and C Logan O’Hoppe was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

HISTORICAL SERIES: During the Angels last series vs. Oakland, Brandon Drury hit .600 (9/15) with seven runs, two doubles, one triple, four home runs, 12 RBI and three walks in the four games against the A’s…His 12 RBI are a new franchise record for a single series and seven XBH hits tie a franchise record for a series.

LEAGUE LEADER: Shohei Ohtani leads the Majors in opponent batting average (.102), ranks tied for fourth in strikeouts (46), and is sixth in WHIP (0.82) and ERA (1.85).

UNEARNED: Angels have allowed 20 unearned runs this season (tied with Rockies for most in Majors). INTERLEAGUE PLAY: LAA owns a 263-226 (.538) all-time Interleague record (2-3 in 2023)…The 263 all-time Interleague wins are third most all time behind Red Sox (290) and Yankees (285)…Angels won four of first five Interleague games in 2022, but are 5-15 vs.
N.L. opponents since.

PLAY FROM AHEAD: Halos have held leads in 23 of 28 games played this year, but have not led in the first two games of series in Milwaukee.

NET-OW: Zack Neto has been hit by seven pitches this season, which is second-most in MLB this year…Since 1901, Neto’s seven HBP are the most in MLB through a players’ first 15 career games played…Neto also was the first player in Angels history to be hit a pitch in four consecutive games (April 18-21).

TEP ON REHAB: RHP Ryan Tepera began a rehab assignment with Low-A Inland Empire Friday night and struck out the side in order in his 1.0 inning of work vs. Rancho Cucamonga.

ALL OVER THE INFIELD: Gio Urshela is one of four players in the Majors to appear at all four infield positions this season…He has made nine starts at first base, seven starts each at third base and shortstop and one game at second base…Oakland’s Aledmys Diaz, Cleveland’s Gabriel Arias and St. Louis’ Brendan Donovan are the only other players to play all four infield positions this year.
