LOS ANGELES ANGELS NOTES:
LEADING OFF: Today, the Angels play the second (0- 1) of six games on a road trip against the Milwaukee Brewers (0-1; April 28-30) and St. Louis Cardinals (May 2-4)…Halos went 5-2 on last homestand against Kansas City (2-1) and Oakland (3-1)…LAA was 2-5 on last road trip against the Boston Red Sox (1-3) and New York Yankees (1-2).
TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS: Today, the Angels selected the contract of RHP Chris Devenski…A Southern California native, Devenski has made seven appearances for Triple-A Salt Lake this yea, allowing four earned runs across 9.0 innings of work…In corresponding moves, LHP José Quijada (left elbow inflammation) has been placed on the 15-day injured list and C Logan O’Hoppe has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
VS. MILWAUKEE: Today marks the second (0-1) of three games for the Angels against Milwaukee this season… This series represents first meeting between the teams since April 8-10, 2019, when the Angels swept a three game set at Angel Stadium…This is Halos first visit to American Family Field since May 2-4, 2016 (Brewers won two of three games)…Angels have won four of last five games against Brewers and eight
of last 11…Overall, LAA is 12-7 vs. Milwaukee since Brewers joined National League.
FAMILIAR FACES: Several members of the Angels have previously been members of the Brewers…Hunter Renfroe played in 125 games for Milwaukee last season and totaled 29 home runs…Brett Phillips made his MLB Debut with the Brewers in 2017 and played in 52 games across parts of two seasons in Milwaukee… Bench Coach Ray Montgomery spent 10 seasons across two stints (2007-10, 2015-20) with the Brewers in a variety of Baseball Operations positions.
GARZA CLAIMED: Yesterday, RHP Justin Garza was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox…He was designated for assignment by the Angels last Friday.
HIGH WATER MARK: With a 14-13 record, Halos are looking to get back to a season-high two games over .500 with a win tonight; (have been two games over .500 five times this year; last time at 14-12 on Thursday)…With a loss, LAA would be exactly .500 for a ninth time this season (1-1, 5-5, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11 and 12-12)
HISTORICAL SERIES: During the Angels last series vs. Oakland, Brandon Drury hit .600 (9/15) with seven runs, two doubles, one triple, four home runs, 12 RBI and three walks in the four games against the A’s…His 12 RBI are a new franchise record for a single series and seven XBH hits tie a franchise record for a series.
OHTANI EXPRESS: Shohei Ohtani had his franchise record streak of 12 consecutive pitching starts allowing two-or-fewer runs snapped Thursday vs. Oakland (Nolan Ryan held the previous record with a nine game streak across the 1972-73 seasons).
LEAGUE LEADER: Shohei Ohtani leads the Majors in opponent batting average (.102), ranks tied for third in strikeouts (46), fifth in WHIP (0.82) and is sixth in ERA.
INTERLEAGUE PLAY: LAA owns a 263-225 (.539) all-time Interleague record (2-2 in 2023)…The 263 all-time Interleague wins are third most all time behind Red Sox (290) and Yankees (285)…Angels won four of first five Interleague games in 2022, but are 5-14 vs. N.L. opponents since.
PLAY FROM AHEAD: Halos have held leads in 23 of 27 games played this year.
NET-OW: Zack Neto has been hit by six pitches this season, which is third-most in MLB this year…His six HBP through his first 10 career games played tied for the most in MLB history, with Ed Fitzpatrick for the 1915 Boston Braves…Neto also was the first player in Angels history to be hit a pitch in four consecutive games (April 18-21).
TEP ON REHAB: RHP Ryan Tepera began a rehab assignment with Low-A Inland Empire last night and struck out the side in order in his 1.0 inning of work vs. Rancho Cucamonga.
ALL OVER THE INFIELD: Gio Urshela is one of four players in the Majors to appear at all four infield positions this season…He has made eight starts at first base, seven starts each at third base and shortstop and one game at second base…Oakland’s Aledmys Diaz, Cleveland’s Gabriel Arias and St. Louis’ Brendan Donovan are the only other players to play all four infield positions this year.
SHY-CYCLE: Thursday afternoon vs. Oakland, Shohei Ohtani was the Angels winning pitcher and finished a home run shy of becoming the first starting pitcher in MLB history to hit for the cycle…He hit a first inning single, third inning double, sixth inning triple and had a 389 ft. flyout to center field in his final at bat.
GRAND THEFT: Monday night vs. Oakland, Taylor Ward robbed Shea Langeliers of a grand slam in the 9th inning…According to Sports Info Solutions, it was the Angels second grand slam robbery since 2004 (when HR-robbing catches began being tracked)…The previous one was by Mike Trout on Aug. 7, 2016 at Seattle (Leonys Martin).
CARDINALS ON DECK: Following the current series in Milwaukee and an off day on Monday, the Angels will conclude their road trip with a three game series at St. Louis…Will mark Halos first contests against the Cardinals since June 21-23, 2019 at Busch Stadium… St. Louis leads the all-time series 11-7…Albert Pujols, who currently serves as a Special Assistant to the Club, has played in all 18 previous games between the
