TONIGHT’S STARTER at PIRATES: RHP TONY GONSOLIN (0-0, 0.00 ERA in 0 GS)

2023 SEASON NOTES:
• 2022 All-Star looks to his first start of the season after being sidelined with a left ankle sprain

• In his rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on April 20th, he hurled three innings, allowing one hit, two earned runs, two walks
while sitting down seven

• Made one Spring Training start, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on three hits, while walking two and striking out two

VS. PIRATES:
• This is his first start of the season and third at PNC Park

• In his last start against the Pirates on May 10th, 2022, he tossed five shut out innings, giving up only one hit and four walks while punching out five

• The Catman is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA (1 ER/6.2 IP) and nine walks to go along with nine strikeouts in two career starts against the Pirates

PITTSBURGH PIRATES NOTES:

THE PIRATES:..Had their season-high seven-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday night…Have won eight of their last 10 games…Have not lost back-to-back games since dropping the final two contests of their season-opening series in Cincinnati…Their 16-8 record is their best
start since the 1992 team had a 17-7 record after the first 24 games.

ROSTER MOVES: The Pittsburgh Pirates today reinstated outfielder Bryan Reynolds from the MLB bereavement list…Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis…In addition, the team selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Cody Bolton from Triple-A Indianapolis…To make room for Bolton on the active roster, right-handed pitcher Wil Crowe has been placed on the 15-day injured list (retro to April 23) with right shoulder discomfort…To make room for Bolton on the 40-man roster, catcher Tyler Heineman has been designated for
assignment…Bolton will wear uniform No. 67.

WRAPPED UP: Earlier today the Pirates signed Bryan Reynolds to a long-term contract extension through the 2030 season with a club option for 2031…Reynolds comes into today fourth among National League outfielders in slugging (.560), tied for second in home runs (five), second in RBI (18) and fifth in total bases (47).

THE OUTFIELD: Pittsburgh’s outfielders have hit 13 home runs this season, which are tied for the fourth-most in all of MLB and second overall among all National League clubs…The only National League team with more home run production from outfielders are the Dodgers (17).

ABOUT TONIGHT’S STARTER: Roansy Contreras will make his fifth start of the season tonight…He has allowed a combined three earned runs in 12.2 innings in his last two starts…Contreras earned his second win in his last start Thursday against the Reds.

THE PITCH ARSENAL: Roansy Contreras has thrown his slider 156 times this season while limiting hitters to a .128 batting average against (5-for-39) with that pitch…According to TruMedia, that’s tied for the sixth-lowest batting average against (with teammate Vince Velasquez) among players who have thrown sliders at least 100 times behind Justin Steele of the Cubs (.077), Atlanta’s Spencer Strider (.103), Ian Hamilton of the Yankees (.118), Texas’ Jon Gray (.120) and Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (.123).

WELCOME TO THE SHOW: Cody Bolton allowed one earned run in 10.0 innings in his final seven appearances with Indianapolis prior to being promoted to the big leagues…Bolton was selected by the Pirates in the sixth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft…He entered the 2021 season ranked by MLB.com as Pittsburgh’s fourth-best pitching prospect while also being recognized by Baseball America that year as having the “Best Slider” in Pittsburgh’s minor league system…The only other Pirate to make his Major League debut this season is Jose Hernandez.

THE RENEGADE: David Bednar comes into today tied for the Major League lead in saves with eight along with Toronto’s Jordan Romano and San Diego’s Josh Hader…The club record for most saves in March/April is 10 – shared by Mike Williams (2002) and Jason Grilli (2013).

KEEPING UP WITH CUTCH’S MILESTONES: Andrew McCutchen is one double shy of breaking a tie with Dave Parker and moving into sole possession of seventh place on the Pirates all-time list with 297 doubles…McCutchen is also three walks shy of 700 in his career as a Pirate and five away from 1000 in his MLB career.

HAYES HEATING UP: Ke’Bryan Hayes is hitting .326 (15-for-46) with four doubles, two triples, one home run and six RBI in his last 11 games…Hayes is also hitting at a .438 clip (7-for-16) with two doubles, two triples and a home run in the first inning this season.

THIS MAGGI MOMENT: On Sunday the Pirates selected the contract of infielder Drew Maggi from Double-A Altoona…The Pirates originally selected Drew Maggi in the 15th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft…The 33-year-old Maggi has played in more than 1100 games in his minor league career but has never appeared in a big league game…Maggi did have his contract selected by Minnesota on September 18, 2021, but did not appear in a game before being optioned back to Triple-A on September 20.

STARTING PITCHER – 59 – RHP ROANSY CONTRERAS
ROANSY CONTRERAS: The 23-year-old righthander is making his fifth start of the season tonight…He allowed one run in 6.2 innings and won a 4-3 decision in his last start Thursday against the Reds.
