KANSAS CITY ROYALS NOTES:
HOMESTAND RECAP: The Royals were blanked for the 12th time this season in yesterday’s 3-0 loss to the Tigers to wrap up the 7-game homestand vs. Tampa Bay (1-2) and Detroit (1-3)…the Royals were outscored 33- 26 (-7) on the homestand, as 5 of the 7 games were decided by 3 runs or fewer, including a trio of 1-run games.
They hit .235 (53-for-226) on the stay and 19 of their 26 runs (73.1%) came in their 2 wins…they scored 2 runs or fewer in all 5 losses and have not scored in their last 13.0 innings since the 5th on Wednesday.
Royals starters had a 3.86 ERA (17 ER in 39.2 IP) in 7 games on the homestand while holding opponents to a .235 average (35-for-149), but the bullpen was charged with 16 runs (15 ER) in 23.1 innings for a 5.79 ERA.
The offense was held homerless in the series vs. Detroit to mark their first 4-game series without a home run in 11 years, since July 26-29, 2012 at Seattle, where they were outscored 21-11 and swept in 4 games.
ROYAL RUNDOWN: The Royals yesterday became the second team in the Majors this year to 70 losses, as their 28-70 (.286) marks the 2nd-worst record, better only than the A’s (27-72)…the Royals are 42 games under .500 for the first time since they ended the 2019 season 44 games under (59-103)…with yesterday’s defeat, the Royals fell to 1-14-2 in their last 17 sets since mid-May, a stretch in which their only series win came from June 30-July 2 vs. the Dodgers…they began the month of July with back-to-back wins over the Dodgers but are 3-11 since.
TRIP TRACKER: The Royals are in the Bronx tonight for the 1st of 3 games as they begin a 6-game trip to New York and Cleveland…they are 13-34 (.277) on the road this year, and snapped a 7-game road skid when they won their most recent road game on July 9 in Cleveland, the last game before the All-Star break…the Royals have not won back-to-back road games since May 16-17 at San Diego and are 5-20 in 25 road games since, a stretch in which they’re winless in eight road sets, including six losses and two splits…the Royals tonight will attempt to win their 4th road series-opening game of the season and their 1st since June 22 at Tropicana Field.
Following this trip, the Royals will enjoy an off day at home next Thursday, which will snap a run of 13 straight days with a game coming out of the break…they will return to Kauffman Stadium for a 6-game homestand from July 28-Aug. 3 vs. the Twins and Mets, who will be visiting KC for the first time since 2019.
BLOWN LEADS: The Royals held a 2-1 lead into the 6th inning on Wednesday night, when Detroit’s Riley Greene doubled to begin the frame and scored on Kerry Carpenter’s RBI single…Miguel Cabrera later added what proved to be the game-deciding RBI knock as Kansas City suffered its Majors-most 34th blown lead loss of the season, ahead of the Athletics (31), White Sox (30) and Cardinals (29)…that marked the Royals 3rd blown lead loss in 7 games since the All-Star break…the Royals 34 blown lead losses for the season are only 2 shy of their total from all of last season, when they suffered 36 blown lead losses, and are 19 shy of the franchise record of 53, set during their 103-loss 2019 campaign…the Royals have held a lead in 47 of their last 69 games (68.1%) since the start of May, but they’re 21-48 (.304) during that stretch with 26 blown lead losses.
They’re 7-23 when scoring in the 1st inning and have lost 13 of their last 15 games when scoring in the 1st.
KRISKE TO JAPAN: The Royals today requested UR waivers on right hander Brooks Kriske, allowing him to pursue his career with the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan…Kriske, 29, had 49 strikeouts in 29.1 innings (15.0 K/9) with Triple-A Omaha this season, but was hit to a 5.52 ERA (18 ER in 29.1 IP)…he made 4 appearances with Kansas City last month, which marked his first big league action since 2021 with the Yankees and Orioles…now he’ll attempt to return to Japan, where he spent the 2022 season with Yokohama.
VS. YANKEES: The Royals are visiting the Bronx this weekend, where they haven’t won a series since Sept. 5-7, 2014…the Royals have lost seven consecutive sets here since, a stretch in which they’re 6-20 (.231) and have been outscored 160-97 (-63)…in fact, the Royals have lost 13 consecutive series to the Yankees overall since they last took 2 of 3 from May 15-17, 2015 at Kauffman Stadium, a stretch in which they’re 11-33 (.250).
The Royals won their most recent game in the Bronx last July 31, when Salvador Perez hit a 3-run home run in the 9th inning to turn a 1-run deficit into a 2-run lead and an 8-6 win, marking the Royals first lead-changing home run vs. the Yankees in the 9th inning or later since The Pine Tar Game on July 24, 1983.
The Royals have won just two of their last 27 season series vs. the Yankees in the Wild Card Era (since 1995), and their last season series win came in 2014, when they went 4-3 despite being outscored 23-18.
HOMECOMINGS: This weekend’s series represents a homecoming for a few Royals, including right hander Jose Cuas, who attended Grand Street Campus HS in Brooklyn…Cuas was drafted as an infielder by Milwaukee in 2015 out of Maryland, converted to pitcher in 2018, but was released by the Brewers that season and signed with the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks…he pitched for the Diamondbacks in 2019, but was released during the pandemic…in the offseason between 2020 and 2021, Cuas pitched for Águilas Cibaeñas in the Dominican Winter League, where he met the Royals Tony Peña Jr…after a brief second stint with Long Island— while also delivering packages for FedEx, Cuas signed a minor league deal with the Royals in 2021, and in less than a year, he ascended from the Dominican Winter League and Independent Atlantic League to the big leagues, where he made his Major League debut with the Royals on May 31, 2022…Cuas fulfilled a lifelong dream when he pitched here at Yankee Stadium twice last July, including a scoreless 7th inning in his 1st appearance.
This series also marks a homecoming for Royals broadcaster Jake Eisenberg, a Port Washington native who grew up approximately 20 miles east of Yankee Stadium…Eisenberg—like Cuas—is a Maryland Terp, and made his big league broadcasting debut last season with the Mets and Royals.
Royals first-year Manager Matt Quatraro grew up in Albany, N.Y., about 150 miles north of Yankee Stadium…Royals Pitching Coach Brian Sweeney is from Yonkers, N.Y. and spends his offseason in Clifton Park—near Albany—where he is a volunteer firefighter for the West Cresent Fire Department.
TRIPLE THREAT: The Royals enter tonight with 25 triples—including 4 triples in their last 5 games—which are 5 more than the Diamondbacks (20) for the Major League lead this season…the Royals are attempting to lead the Majors in triples for the second straight season—after pacing the league with 38 in 2022…that was the first time they led the Majors in triples since 2009 (51), but the Royals 2,227 triples since their inception in 1969 are by far the most in the Majors, 138 more than the Pirates (2,089) and 292 more than the Tigers (1,935), the next closest American League team.
A Major League-most 11 different Royals have recorded a triple this season, a group led by Bobby Witt Jr., whose 6 triples rank 2nd in the Majors, 1 behind Shohei Ohtani (7)…Witt Jr.’s 12 career triples are tied with Brian McRae for the most by a Royal through a player’s first two seasons.
ARMS RACE: The Royals enter tonight with a Major League-most 22 outfield assists this season, which are 2 more than the Tigers (20) and 3 more than the Cardinals (19), who rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively…the Royals 22 outfield assists match their total from all of last season, as they attempt to lead the Majors in this category for the first time since 2011 and 2012, when they had 51 in both seasons, which were the most by any team since Cleveland had 51 in 1993.
Nine different Royals have recorded an outfield assist this season, led by MJ Melendez, whose 6 outfield assists are tied for 6th most in the AL.
MARSH IS NOT MELLOW: The Royals will start 25-year-old Alec Marsh tonight in the 1st game of this weekend series in the Bronx…Marsh is coming off a stellar performance in Game 1 of last Saturday’s doubleheader vs. the Rays—the league’s 2nd-highest-scoring offense—who he held to 2 runs over 6.0 innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts in just his 3rd career start…in doing so, Marsh became the sixth American League pitcher this century with an 11-strikeout game within his 1st 3 career outings, following Kyle Bradish (May 10, 2022), Shohei Ohtani (April 8, 2018), Chris Archer (Sept. 8, 2012), Matt Moore (Sept. 22, 20211) and Félix Hernández (Aug. 15, 2005)…his 21 strikeouts (in 15.0 IP) are the most by any Royals through 3 career appearances.
TONIGHT’S STARTERS: RHP ALEC MARSH (0-3, 5.40)
ALEC MARSH is making his 4th career start tonight vs. the Yankees…he was selected by the Royals in the 2nd round of the 2019 Draft out of Arizona State University.
STRUCKKKKKKKKKKK HIM OUT: Marsh made his 3rd career start on Saturday in Game 1 of the Royals split doubleheader vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, in which he established career highs in both innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (11)…he turned in his 1st career quality start with 6.0 innings of 2-run ball, however he was supported with just 1 run and suffered the loss in Kansas City’s 6-1 defeat…each of the 2 runs he allowed came via solo homers, including 1 by Jose Siri in the 3rd inning and 1 by Francisco Mejía in the 5th…he stranded a 2-out single in the 2nd, a 1-out double in the 3rd and a 1-out single in the 6th, with just 5 hits and 1 walk charged to his line.
His 11 strikeouts marked the most by a Royal since Brady Singer had 12 on July 23, 2022 vs. the Rays…it was also the most strikeouts by a Royal within a player’s 1st 3 career outings, breaking the previous mark set by Runelvys Hernández, who had 9 in his 2nd start on July 20, 2002 (Game 1 of a DH).
Alec became just the sixth American League pitcher in this century to record an 11-strikeout game within his 1st 3 career outings, following Kyle Bradish (May 10, 2022), Shohei Ohtani (April 8, 2018), Chris Archer (Sept. 8, 2012), Matt Moore (Sept. 22, 20211) and Félix Hernández (Aug. 15, 2005).
He has 21 strikeouts in 15.0 innings to start his career, which are the most by a Royal through 3 career appearances, 3 more than Singer’s 18 strikeouts…to keep his pace through 4 career outings, Marsh would need at least 7 strikeouts tonight to pass Steve Busby, who holds the club record with 27 strikeouts.
ROUND TWO: Alec made his 2nd career start on July 5 in Minneapolis, where he held the Twins to 3 runs (2 earned) in 5.0 innings of a 5-0 shutout loss, with 5 strikeouts…he became the first pitcher in club history with multiple pickoffs in 1 of his first 2 career outings, and was the first pitcher in the Majors to do so since Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco had 2 pickoffs on Sept. 8, 2009 (G1), his 2nd career outing…he was the first Royals pitcher to record multiple pickoffs in a game—at any point in his career—since James Shields had a pair on May 29, 2014 at Toronto.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: On June 30, he became the fourth Royal to make his Major League debut this year, following right-handed pitcher James McArthur on June 28 vs. Cleveland, infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor on June 17 vs. the Angels and left hander Austin Cox on May 4 vs. Baltimore…he was the first Royals pitcher to start in his Majors debut since Angel Zerpa did so on Sept. 30, 2021 vs. the Guardians.
With his debut, he became the 15th different starting pitcher the Royals have employed this season, and two weeks later, Cole Ragans made his Royals debut in Game 2 of the doubleheader vs. Tampa Bay to become the 16th different starter…this marks the most different starters by any Royals team since the 2006 club used a franchise-record 17 different starting pitchers.
