DETROIT TIGERS NOTES:
TIGERS CLINCH SERIES WITH ONE-RUN WIN: The Tigers won their second straight over the Brewers on Tuesday, picking up a 4-3 victory. Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, while Spencer Torkelson had two hits and a RBI. Javier Báez and Miguel Cabrera also contributed a pair of hits in the win. Spencer Turnbull started for Detroit and received a no decision, giving up two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Mason Englert pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with four punchouts to earn his first Major League win, while Jason Foley got the final four outs of the game to record his second save.
KERRY STRIKES AGAIN: Kerry Carpenter staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead in last night’s game with a three-run blast in the second inning, his fourth of the season. Carpenter has made his hits count this season as eight of his 13 hits have gone for extra bases, including all four of hits homers coming in his last eight hits.
MULTI-HIT MIGGY: Miguel Cabrera had a pair of hits in last night’s game, recording his first multi-hit game of the season and the 880th of his
Major League career, breaking a tie with Robin Yount for 20th place in MLB history and moving into a tie with Rogers Hornsby for 19th. With two hits last night, Cabrera now has 3,097 hits in his career, 13 away from tying Dave Winfield (3,110) for 22nd on the MLB all-time list.
STREAKING: Javier Báez had a pair of hits, including a double, in last night’s game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest by a Tigers player this season. After starting the season 4×40 in his first 11 games of the season, Báez has gone 14×37 with four doubles and seven RBI during his current streak, which is tied for the second-longest active streak in the big leagues.
FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: Mason Englert continued the impressive start to his season last night, earning his first big league win after pitching 2.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts. He has thrown 2.0-or-more innings in five of his eight outings this season. Prior to this season, Englert, who the Tigers selected in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft from Texas, had started 43 games in the Minors, including only three starts above High A.
TIGERS AND BREWERS: The Tigers and Brewers conclude their only series of the season today in Milwaukee. With last night’s win, Detroit clinched the season series over the Brewers for the second straight year in which the two teams have met. The Tigers lead the all-time series against the Brewers 229-205, including a narrow 110-106 edge in games played in Milwaukee.
ON THE ROAD: The Tigers are 2-3 on their current six-game road trip, which includes three games at Baltimore (0-3) and three games at Milwaukee (2-0). Detroit is 5-9 away from Comerica Park this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .201/.273/.306 on the road, while the
pitching staff has a 4.57 ERA (122.0IP/62ER).
ON DECK: The Tigers return home tomorrow to begin a seven-game homestand, which starts with a four-game set against the Orioles. Detroit and Baltimore played last weekend with the O’s sweeping the three-game series. The Tigers have won the season series over the Orioles each of the last five seasons the two teams have played.
