HE’S THE MAN(NING): Matt Manning turned in another impressive start yesterday against the Yankees, working 6.0 scoreless innings with two hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts. He became the second pitcher in franchise history to have back-to-back starts with at least 6.0 shutout innings and two-or-fewer hits allowed,
joining Michael Fulmer, who had three straight from June 1-12, 2016. Over his last four starts, Manning has a 2-0 record with a 0.38 ERA (23.2IP/1ER).
A CARPENTER AND HIS TOOLS: Kerry Carpenter had a pair of hits with a RBI in yesterday’s game, wrapping up a strong month of August. In 28 games during the month, he hit .347/.405/.653 with four doubles, nine home runs and 20 RBI. Among American League hitters in August, he ranked tied for second in home runs, while he was third in OPS (1.059), fifth in slugging percentage and seventh in batting average.
WELCOME TO THE SHOW: Andre Lipcius was recalled from Triple A Toledo prior to tonight’s game. His first appearance will mark his Major League debut. Lipcius has played in 97 games with the Mud Hens this season, hitting .272/.363/.419 with 16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 58 RBI. In 18 games during August, he slashed .343/.438/.612 with a double, a triple, five home runs and 21 RBI.
ON THE ROAD: The Tigers tonight begin a six-game road trip, which includes three games at Chicago (AL) (September 1-3) and three games at New York (AL) (September 5-7). Detroit is 31- 34 away from Comerica Park this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .224/.291/.376 on the road, while the pitching staff has a 4.17 ERA

TIGERS AND WHITE SOX: The Tigers and White Sox begin their third series of the season tonight. The two teams will conclude their season series next weekend in Detroit with three games from September 8-10. Chicago (AL) holds a 4-3 edge this season, including sweeping a three-game set at Guaranteed Rate Field earlier this season.
AGAINST THE AL CENTRAL: The Tigers continue divisional play tonight against the White Sox. Detroit is 25-15 against American League Central teams so far this season. The Tigers are 9-2-1 in their 11 series against division opponents. Detroit is looking to post its first winning record against the AL Central since 2016 (38-37).

- Rodriguez will make his 21st start of the season tonight in the series opener at Chicago (AL). Suffered the loss in his last start on Saturday vs. Houston, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and a strikeout in 4.2 innings. Has faced the White Sox nine times in his career, posting a 3-0 record with a 3.61 ERA (52.1IP/21ER) and 52 strikeouts…in three career starts at Guaranteed Rate Field, Rodriguez is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA (17.2IP/5ER) and 21 strikeouts. Among American League pitchers with at least 110.0 innings pitched, he ranks sixth in FIP (3.22), while he is eighth in ERA (3.21) and ninth in opponent batting average (.228). Threw 7.0 scoreless innings with four hits allowed, three walks and five strikeouts on August 8 vs. Minnesota…was his fifth start this season with at least 7.0 shutout innings, the most such starts by a Tigers pitcher since Justin Verlander, who also had five outings with at least 7.0 scoreless innings in 2013. Since 2018, he has a .656 winning percentage, which ranks fifth among all active Major League pitchers over that span (min. 120 starts).
CHICAGO WHITE SOX NOTES:
WHITE SOX AT A GLANCE
The Chicago White Sox have won three of their last five games as they open a three-game homestand tonight against Detroit. RHP Touki Toussaint, who threw 5.0 scoreless IP in his last start on 8/26 vs. Oakland, is scheduled to start for the White Sox. The Sox are coming off a 1-2 trip to Baltimore, which ended on Wednesday with a come-from-behind, 10-5 victory. Following this three-game series, the White Sox take a sixgame, seven-day trip to Kansas City (9/4-6) and Detroit (9/8-10). The Sox went 3-4 homestand on their last homestand vs. Seattle (1-2) and Oakland (2-2) from 8/21-27.
TONIGHT’S STORYLINES
