DETROIT TIGERS NOTES:

TIGERS DROP BACK AND FORTH AFFAIR IN SERIES FINALE: The Tigers dropped the series finale to the Marlins, 8-6, on Sunday. Andy Ibáñez went 2×3 with a double, while Javier Báez went 2×5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Matt Vierling added two hits and Miguel Cabrera went 1×3 with a double and two RBI. Tarik Skubal started for Detroit, allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Tyler Holton took the loss, giving up two runs on three hits with one strikeout in 1.0 inning.

MIGGY MAGIC IN MIAMI: Miguel Cabrera had three hits during the weekend series against the Marlins, his final games against his original organization. Cabrera’s enters tonight’s game against the Pirates with 3,137 hits in his Major League career, four shy of tying Tony Gwynn for 20th place in MLB history. Since May 30, he
is hitting .321/.398/.434 with nine doubles, a homer and 12 RBI.

GREENE MEANS GO: Riley Greene was on base twice in Sunday’s series finale at Miami, going 1×4 with a double and a walk. Greene has recorded at least one hit in 39 of his last 48 games, slashing .348/.415/.527 with 13 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 18 RBI. Among American League players with at least 250 plate appearances this season, Greene ranks fifth with a .307 batting average and ninth with a .372 on-base percentage.

ON THE ROAD: The Tigers are 1-2 on their current five-game road trip, which includes three games at Miami (1-2) and two games at Pittsburgh (August 1-2). Detroit is 25-29 on the road this season. The Tigers are hitting .224/.292/.364 on the road this season, while the pitching staff has a 4.25 ERA (467.2IP/221ER).

TIGERS AND PIRATES: The Tigers and Pirates continue their season series tonight. The two teams played earlier this season in Detroit, splitting a two-game set. In 2022, the Tigers went 3-1 against the Pirates, including sweeping a two-game series in Pittsburgh.

INTERLEAGUE ACTION: The Tigers continue their interleague schedule tonight against the Pirates. Detroit is 17-18 against National League foes this season, including a 5-3 record against NL Central teams. The Tigers have finished with a winning record against NL opponents in each of the last two seasons.

INJURY REHAB UPDATE: Spencer Turnbull made an injury rehab start with Single A West Michigan on Sunday, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts. In two rehab starts with the Whitecaps, Turnbull has thrown 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with no walks and five punchouts.

TONIGHT’S TIGERS STARTING PITCHER

25 Matt Manning • 3-2, 4.32 ERA (41.2IP/20ER)

  • Manning will make his ninth start of the season tonight in the series opener at Pittsburgh.
  • Took the loss in his last start on Thursday in the second game of the doubleheader vs, Los Angeles (AL), giving up seven runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
  • His only career start against the Pirates came on September 8, 2021 at PNC Park, when he received a no decision after giving up a run on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 1.0 inning.
  • Was the Tigers starting pitcher for the first combined no-hitter in franchise history on July 8 vs. Toronto, tossing 6.2 innings with three walks and five strikeouts…marked his fourth career start with at least 6.0 shutout innings.
  • Returned to the active roster on June 27 at Texas, allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings…had been sidelined since April 12 with a right foot fracture.
