MLB Preview: Detroit Tigers (34-45) at Texas Rangers (49-31)

DETROIT TIGERS NOTES:

TIGERS SUFFER SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS TO TEXAS: The Tigers were unable to overcome an early deficit last night, falling to the Rangers 10- 2. Detroit was getting shut out until the ninth when Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer, his seventh of the season. Zach McKinstry added two hits, including a double, while Andy Ibáñez went 1×4. Joey Wentz started for the Tigers and took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

ROSTER MOVES: The Tigers have announced the following roster moves:
*Optioned LHP Joey Wentz to Triple A Toledo

*Selected LHP Zach Logue from Triple A Toledo

*To make room for Logue on the 40-man roster, designated LHP Anthony Misiewicz for assignment

CARPENTER NAILS ANOTHER ONE: Kerry Carpenter broke up the shutout last night with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, his seventh of the season. Since being reinstated from the injured list on June 9, he is slashing .339/.377/.554 with three doubles, three home runs and eight RBI.

SCHOOP ON THE MOUND: Playing in the 1,183rd game of his Major League career, Jonathan Schoop made the first pitching appearance of his professional career last night, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings with one hit and one strikeout. He became the first Tigers position player to record a multi-inning pitching appearance since Willie Smith tossed 2.0 innings on September 25, 1963 vs. Washington.

TIGERS AND RANGERS: The Tigers and Rangers conclude their season series this afternoon. With last night’s win, Texas clinched the season series over Detroit for the first time since 2019. The Tigers have a 374-334 advantage in the all-time series, including a 5-4 edge at Globe Life Field.

ON THE ROAD: The Tigers are 1-2 on their current seven-game road trip, which includes four games at Texas (1-2) and three games at Colorado (June 30-July 2). Detroit is 16-24 on the road this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .214/.283/.340 away from Comerica Park, while the pitching staff has compiled a 4.30 ERA (345.2IP/165ER).

ON DECK: The Tigers continue their road trip tomorrow as they open a three-game series against the Rockies. The two teams met last season in Detroit with Colorado winning two-of-three games. The Rockies hold a slight 17- 16 edge in the all-time series, including a 10-5 advantage at Coors Field.

INJURY REHAB UPDATES: Tarik Skubal made an injury rehab start for Triple A Toledo last night, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts…Trey Wingenter made an injury rehab appearance with the Mud Hens last night, throwing a perfect inning with one strikeout.

  • Olson will make the sixth appearance and fifth start of his Major League career today in the series finale at Texas.
  • Earned his first big league win on Saturday vs. Minnesota, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings… became the 11th Tigers pitcher since 1901 to strike out nine-or-more batters in one of his first five Major League games (last, Tyler Alexander, July 27, 2019 at Seattle).
