MLB Preview: Cleveland Guardians (31-36) at San Diego Padres (33-34)

CLEVELAND GUARDIANS NOTES:

No team release available.

SAN DIEGO PADRES NOTES:

Friars blank Guardians 5-0 to take the series, are poised for their 1st series sweep at Petco this year

  • Starter Michael Wacha went 6.2 innings of scoreless ball, and he received his team-leading 7th win of the season (now 7-2)… he fanned 5 Guardians and allowed 1 walk on 4 hits.
  • San Diego combined for 4 homers last night (Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Juan Soto, and Nelson Cruz)…the 4 homers were their most at Petco this season and their most in downtown San Diego since July 29, 2022 (5).
  • It was the Padres’ 6th shutout win of the year, and all 6 of their shutout victories have been at Petco Park this season.

Fernando becomes the 1st player in MLB history to have his stat line last night

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-4 with 3 extra-base hits (2 doubles and a homer), 2 runs scored, a walk, 2 stolen bases, and an outfield assist…per Elias, he became the 1st player in baseball’s Modern Era (since 1900) to have such a stat line.
  • He joined Tony Gwynn as the only Padre in team history to have a game with a homer, 2 stolen bases, and an outfield assist (Gwynn did it on May 2, 1997 vs. the Expos, where he hit a homer, had 2 SB, and had an outfield assist with 0 doubles).

Padres look for their 1st series sweep of the season (in a series longer than 2 G)

  • The Friars have won 5 of their last 6 games and 6 of their last 8…in their last 8 games, Padres pitchers have a 2.89 ERA (23 ER, 71.2 IP), and Padres batters have a .286 average with a .513 SLG and 18 doubles, a triple, and 14 HR…they’ve scored 5.4 runs per game since June 5 and have out-scored opponents 43-23.
  • With yesterday’s win, the Padres claimed 1st series win at home since May 1-3 vs. the Reds, and today, they’re in search for their 1st series sweep of the season in a series longer than 2 games (won both games of their 2-game series vs. the Giants in the Mexico City series)…2023 is the 1st time since ’18 that the Friars went this deep into a season without any sweeps of 3+ games (had no sweeps of 3+ games at all in 2018).

Weathers gets the rock

  • Starter Ryan Weathers looks to expand on his last outing on Saturday @ Colorado, in which Weathers struck out 2 and allowed just 3 hits and 1 run on Nolan Jones’ second-inning homer…he threw 25 of his 43 pitches for strikes and exited after 3.0 innings to start a bullpen game.

San Diego slugging

  • With his HR last night, Manny Machado tied with Wil Myers for most HR hit at Petco as a Padre (64 HR).
  • Fernando Tatis Jr. also hit his 11th career leadoff homer last night, setting a new club record (previous was Will Venable’s 10)…it was the 2nd leadoff HR of the year for San Diego, and the 1st was also from Fernando on May 11 @ MIN.
  • Since the beginning of this month, the Padres have scored 5.08 runs per game on average…while that ranks 8th in MLB in that time, the Padres had scored just 4.07 R/G from the beginning of the season through the end of May (which ranked 24th in baseball).

STARTING PITCHER – RYAN WEATHERS 40
Weathers set for 9th start of season
23-year-old Ryan Weathers is slated for his 9th start of the season, his 4th at Petco Park and the 1st of his career vs. Cleveland…he’s fared at tad better in his 7 road appearances (5 starts) with a 4.56 ERA, .261 AVG against and .725 opp OPS vs his 3 home appearances (all starts) with a 5.68 ERA, .346 AVG against and 1.019 opp. OPS. on the road and the 4th of his career vs. COL…the only other 2 clubs he’s made 4 starts against are the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers…his 3 previous starts vs. the Rockies came during the 2021 season, and his only start at Coors Field came on August 16, 2021, when he allowed 5 runs on 8 hits across 4.0 IP in SD’s 6-5 defeat. 3.0 innings of 1-run ball, doesn’t factor into 3-2 win at Coors Field

Last Sat @ COL, Weathers struck out 2 and allowed just 3 hits and 1 run on Nolan Jones’ second-inning homer…he threw 25 of his 43 pitches for strikes and exited after three innings to start a bullpen game…asked on Friday if it would be a normal start for Weathers, Manager Bob Melvin smiled and said: “I wouldn’t tell you if it isn’t.” Weathers tied for most pickoffs in Majors Last Sat @ COL, Weathers converted his 4th pickoff of the season, which puts him in a tie for most pickoffs in the Majors in ’23 with Patrick Corbin..Weathers is now the 5th-fastest pitcher (in terms of IP) to 13 career pickoffs among pitchers to debut in Divisional Era (since 1969)…he trails only Jerry Garvin in ’77 (92.0), Ryan Feierabend in ’14 (108.0), Greg Smith in ’08 (121.0) and Mark Guthrie in ’90 (126.2)…his 9 pickoffs in 2021 led the Majors.

Numbers with none on and with runners on
With no runners on, opponents are hitting .286 vs. Weathers and with none on/out, they are hitting .351…with runners on, they are hitting .300 and with RISP, they are hitting .344…. he’s faced 5 hitters with the bases loaded, and they are 0-for-5.

Hard hit percentage in the top 10 percentile
Weathers is getting hit hard only 31.4% of the time, which ranks in the 90th percentile this season….the MLB average hard hit percentage is 36.1%, while his career avg is 39.7%.

Weathers’ barrel rate down in ’23
Weathers allowed 25 barrels in his 1,617 pitches thrown in 2021 for a 8.4 barrel %…this season, he’s allowed 7 barrels in his 668 pitches thrown for a 5.8 barrel % that ranks in the 79th percentile this season.

Weathers limiting lefties to a .207 clip
The southpaw has limited the 33 left-handed hitters he’s faced to a .207 clip, and Nolan Jones’ solo HR last Sat @ COL is the only long ball he’s surrendered to a left-handed hitter…5 of the 6 HRs he’s allowed have come agaisnt righties, who are hitting .313 against him (129 batters faced).
