CLEVELAND GUARDIANS NOTES:

LATE RUN GIVES TWINS EDGE IN PITCHING DUEL
The Guardians dropped a second straight decision to the Minnesota Twins, getting edged in a narrow 1-0 affair on Friday night at Target Field…marked the 7th time for Cleveland to get shut out this season and the club’s second 1-0 loss to the Twins ever at Target Field (also June 23, 2022).

AARON CIVALE (5.0IP, 4H, 0R, 2BB, 4SO, 83 pitches) returned from a lengthy IL-stint to find himself in a pitchers duel, as the righthander traded zeroes across 5.0 frames with Twins starter Bailey Ober (6.0IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 3SO, HB, 78 pitches)…Civale retired 14 of the 20 batters he faced, scattering 3 singles and one double…the scoreless tie remained in place until the bottom of the 7th inning, when Jorge Polanco belted a NICK SANDLIN offering off the rightfield wall for a game-winning RBI-double…the pivotal moment was preceded by Ryan Jeffers’ lead-off double and a one-out walk… Cleveland’s offense did tally 8 hits in the defeat, but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 9…STEVEN KWAN’s lead-off double in the 8th stood at the Guardians lone extra-base knock…WILL BRENNAN and MYLES STRAW each chipped in a pair of singles.

Cleveland (25-32) sits in 3rd place in AL Central standings, 5.5 games behind 1st-place Minnesota (31-27) and 2.0 games behind 2nd-place Detroit (-3.5G, 26-29)…Guardians have dropped 26 of last 42 overall since starting the year 9-6…Cleveland is 2-3 on this 7-game road trip through Baltimore (2-1) & Minnesota (0-2, two-to-play); club has dropped 6 of 8 and 12 of last 16 road games (13-17 overall).

JUST ADD GARLICK: The Twins have placed outfielder/first baseman Joey Gallo on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to June 2) with a left hamstring strain…Gallo has hit .188 (26-for138) with five doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 23 RBI, 25 walks, 21 runs scored and a .321

TWINS ML MONTHLYS: High-A Cedar Rapids outfielder Kala’i Rosario and Low-A Fort Myers right-handed pitcher Zebby Matthews have been named Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Month for May.

Rosario, 20, hit .333 (31-for-93) with seven doubles, one triple, five home runs, 16 RBI, 14 runs scored, 15 walks, a .441 on-base percentage, a .491 slugging percentage and a 1.033 OPS in 26 games for the Kernels

Matthews, 23, appeared in four games (3 starts) for the Mighty Mussels, going 0-1, 1.96 ERA (18.1 IP, 4 ER), with two walks, 27 strikeouts and a 1.15 WHIP.
