GUARDS COME BACK IN NINTH, WALK TO VICTORY
The Guardians staged a thrilling, come-from-behind 3-2 victory to beat the Yankees in Monday night’s series opener in the Bronx… Cleveland has dropped 2 of 3 in four consecutive series, as club descended upon Yankee Stadium seeking first series victory overall since April 14-16 at Washington.
Held scoreless for 8.1 frames by Yankees starter Domingo Germán (8.1IP, 2H, 1R-ER, BB, 6SO, 88 pitches), Cleveland rallied for a trio of runs in the 9th inning, finally chasing the righthander with a one-out single by STEVEN KWAN…the Guardians then loaded the bases against Clay Holmes on an infield dribbler off the bat of AMED ROSARIO and opposite-field single by JOSÉ RAMÍREZ, setting the table for JOSH NAYLOR to pull a game-tying 2-run single into right field…Yankees then went to Wandy Peralta, who walked JOSH BELL to re-load the bases and struck out ANDRÉS GIMÉNEZ before walking MIKE ZUNINO with 2 outs to push across the winning run.
CAL QUANTRILL worked into the 8th inning of a quality start (7.1IP, 6H, 2R-ER, BB, 2SO, HR, 97 pitches), allowing both runs in the 3rd on a one-out solo homer to Jose Trevino and two-out RBIsingle to D.J. LeMahieu…EMMANUEL CLASE worked a perfect 9th to cement the comeback, as well as his 10th save.
