TRANSACTIONS
- Today, the Reds sent on a rehabilitation assignment to the Arizona Complex League Reds RHP Hunter Greene (right hip pain) and transferred from the ACL Reds to Louisville the rehab assignment for RHP Casey Legumina (right shoulder pain)…Greene last pitched for the Reds on 6/17 at Hou, Legumina on 6/20 vs Col.
- Last night, the Reds acquired from the Athletics LHP Sam Moll (#50) and international cap space for minor league RHP Joe Boyle…the necessary corresponding 26-player roster move will be made when Moll reports… he is scheduled to report in time for tonight’s game.
TONIGHT’S GAME
- Is Game 2 (1-0) in a series of 4 night games vs Hunter Hippel’s Cubs and Game 8 (4-3) of an 11-day, 10-game road trip (1-2 at Mil, 2-1 at LAD, 1-0 at Chc).

CHICAGO CUBS NOTES:
Cubs vs. Reds
The Cubs and Reds play 13 games spanning four series … the teams played a weather-shortened two-game set in Cincinnati, April 3-4, splitting the series, before the Reds swept a three-game set at Wrigley Field May 26-28 … following this series, the clubs meet four times in three days Sept. 1-3 in Cincinnati for the final time this season … Chicago last season went 11-8 vs. the Reds, its first season series victory over Cincinnati since going 11-8 in 2018.
THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER: The Chicago Cubs today play game two of a four-game set with the Cincinnati Reds after dropping last night’s series-opener, 6-5 … Chicago fell into a 6-1 deficit in the third inning, but rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, then scored one in the eighth, before ultimately falling short … Dansby Swanson homered for the fourth time in his last 11 games, while Yan Gomes registered his fifth three-plus hit game of the season … the Cubs bullpen tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, led by Javier Assad (3.2 IP), with contributions from Daniel Palencia (1.1 IP) and Mark Leiter Jr. (1.0 IP).
The Cubs are 10-3 in their last 13 games since July 18 … following play on July 20, the Cubs sat 7.0-games out of a wild-card spot and 8.5-games back of the division lead … the club enters today 3.5-games out of a wild card spot and 5.0-games back of division-leading Cincinnati.
The Cubs are 0-1 on this seven-game homestand against the Cincinnai Reds (0-1) and the Atlanta Braves (3 games beginning Friday).
Dating to June 9, the Cubs have scored 255 runs, second-most in the majors (Atlanta, 261), and their .265 batting average (401-for-1,514) ranks seventh in the majors.
Today marks the eighth (5-2) of 16-straight gamedays through August 9.
The Cubs (+56) and Cincinnati (+4) are the only N.L. Central Division clubs with positive run differentials (Pittsburgh, -71; St. Louis, -27; Milwaukee, -16).
RISING TIDES: The Cubs, at 53-53, are 27-17 since June 9 when the team was a season-low 10-games below .500 at 26-36 following a loss at the Angels June 8.
Starting June 9, the Cubs’ 27-17 record (.628 winning percentage) is tied for the third-best in the majors, surpassed only by Atlanta (29-13/.690) and today’s opponent, Cincinnati (30-15/.667).
Ed Hartig notes this is just the third season in franchise history in which the team has found itself at least 10-games under .500 only to once again reach the .500 mark (also 1968 and 1996).
A NEW FACE AND AN OLD FACE: The Cubs yesterday made two trades, acquiring infielder Jeimer Candelario and a cash consideration from Washington for left-handed pitcher DJ Herz and infielder Kevin Made, and right-handed pitcher José Cuas from Kansas City for outfielder Nelson Velázquez.
Candelario, who was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in Sept. 2010, spent parts of seven seasons with the organization (2011-17), including 16 games with the major league club in 2016 and 2017.
Ed Hartig notes that Candelario becomes the first Cub since Jon Lieber (1999- 02 and 2008) to re-join the team after a gap of at least five seasons.
BELLI BOMBS AWAY: Cody Bellinger finished the month of July hitting .400 (40-for100) with five doubles, eight home runs and 24 RBI in 26 games … per Elias, Bellinger became the seventh Cub (ninth instance) to hit at least .400, with eight-or-more home runs in a calendar month (last Rick Wilkins, June 1993) … please find a member of the Cubs Media Relations staff if you’d like the full list!
In the month of July led major league hitters in hits, average and total bases (69), ranked third in RBI (24), fifth in slugging (.698), tied for fifth in homers and sixth in OPS (1.122).
In 37 games since being reinstated from the injured list on June 15 (left knee contusion), Bellinger is hitting .357 (50-for-140) with seven doubles, eight homers, 26 RBI, 27 runs scored, a .394 OBP and a .579 slugging percentage.
STEELE-ING THE SHOW: Justin Steele tonight is scheduled to make his 26th start at Wrigley Field since the beginning of the 2022 season … during that span, he has posted a 2.52 ERA (37 ER/132.0 IP), the second-lowest home ERA among N.L. starting pitchers and the third-lowest in the majors (min. 25 GS).
In the 25 home starts since the beginning of the 2022 season, Steele has allowed three runs or fewer in 21 of those outings and completed at least 5.0 innings in 19.
GOLDEN DEFENSE: Per Fangraphs, entering play today, the Cubs have recorded 26 defensive runs saved in 2023, the fourth-best mark in the N.L. and tied for sixth-most in the major leagues … Chicago finished the 2022 season with four defensive runs saved, which ranked 21st in the majors.
Dansby Swanson’s 11 defensive runs saved are the second-most among major league shortstops, trailing Wander Franco (15), and are tied for the seventh-most among all major leaguers.
COMING UP CLUTCH: Javier Assad since June 27 has pitched to a 0.40 ERA (1 ER/22.1 IP) in nine games … during that span, Assad’s 0.40 ERA is the second-lowest among major league relievers (min. 15.0 IP), trailing Felix Bautista (0.00).
Assad last night made his third relief outing of at least 3.2 scoreless innings this season, becoming the second pitcher in the majors this season (also Sean Manaea) to have at least three such outings.
