TRANSACTIONS

  • The Reds today recalled from Louisville RHP Ricky Karcher (#74) and RHP Joel Kuhnel (#66), optioned to Louisville RHP Eduardo Salazar, placed on the 15-day injured list RHP Graham Ashcraft (left calf contusion) and sent to Louisville on a rehabilitation assignment OF/1B Wil Myers (kidney stone, left shoulder sprain).
  • When he pitches, Karcher will become the ninth player to make his Major League debut this season and the 12th rookie to play for the Reds.
  • Myers joins Joey Votto (left rotator cuff, left biceps surgeries), OF Henry Ramos (right hip strain) and RHP Casey Legumina (right ankle contusion) on rehab at Louisville…RHP Tony Santillan (left hamstring strain) is scheduled to throw live batting practice today in Columbus and next week could go on a rehab assignment with the Bats.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS NOTES:

RECENT REDBIRDS: The St. Louis Cardinals begin a six-game homestand at Busch Stadium tonight with the opener of a three-game weekend series with the division-rival Cincinnati Reds … The San Francisco Giants make their annual visit to St. Louis for three games beginning on Monday … St. Louis recently went 1-5 over a six-game road trip through Pittsburgh (0-3) and Texas (1-2).

FLIGHT PATTERN: Entering today, the Cardinals are in last place in the National League Central, 8.0 games behind first place Milwaukee and 0.5 games behind fourth place Chicago … Overall this season, St. Louis has spent 44 of 71 days in last place on the 2023 Major League schedule (April 26-May 19 and May 29-present) … This season is the Cardinals 7th-worst start through 63 games and worst since beginning 25-38 (.397) in 1995.

PLUS/MINUS: The Cardinals (+1), Twins (+35, 31-32), and Padres (+16, 29-33) and the only three MLB teams with losing records but positive run differentials.

ROSTER UPDATE: Prior to tonight’s homestand opener, the Cardinals activated outfielder Dylan Carlson from the 10-Day Injured List and optioned outfielder Juan Yepez to Memphis (AAA) … Carlson, who missed the previous 21 games due to a left ankle sprain suffered on May 14 at Boston, hit .333 (3-9) with a double, RBI, and three walks during a recent three-game injury rehab assignment with Memphis this week … Additionally, right-handed pitcher Jake Woodford (right shoulder inflammation) has been activated from the 15-Day Injured List and optioned to Memphis.

RED ALERT!: The Cardinals have won nine of their last 12 over the Reds at Busch Stadium (Sept. 11, 2021-present), however eight of those 12 games were decided by two runs or fewer … St. Louis has finished with a .500 record or better vs. the Reds at home in each of the last 16 seasons (2007-22) and beaten Cincinnati at home (93-53 record) more than any opponent at Busch III.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The Cardinals have lost the first game in 16 of their 20 series, including a franchise record 11-straight to begin the season … St. Louis is 4-0 when winning the series opener, but just 2-11-3 in series when losing the first game … The last time the Redbirds won a series when dropping the opener was April 10-12 at Colorado (2-1).

HOME IMPROVEMENT: Recently finishing a stretch of playing 13 of their last 15 games on the road across five different cities (5-10 record), St. Louis enters today having played the 4th-fewest home games in MLB (28) … The Cardinals have won seven of their last 10 home games (May 7-present) since starting 5-13 in their first 18 home affairs.

THE FULL MONTY: Jordan Montgomery is attempting to break a streak of a career high 10 straight starts without recording a win (April 13-present), tying Steven Matz for the team’s longest active streak of winless starts … Montgomery’s last win was April 8 in which he fired 7.0 scoreless innings at Milwaukee’s American Family Field … The Cardinals have lost nine of 12 Monty starts by one-run and/or shutout … Johan Oviedo and Daniel Ponce de Leon share the Cardinals record at 19 winless starts in a row.

DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS: Jordan Walker has recorded his first 24 career hits off 24 different pitchers, 4th-longest streak by a player to begin their Cardinals career in the Expansion Era (since 1961) … The highest for any MLB player to debut in the Expansion Era is 8 by Peter O’Brien, whose first 38 hits while playing for Arizona and Miami (2015-19) came against 38 different pitchers

THE COLLEGE GAME: Cardinals watching their alma maters participate in the NCAA Division I College World Series Tournament with this weekend’s Super Regionals include LHP Jordan Montgomery (South Carolina), INF Tommy Edman (Stanford), 1B Luken Baker (TCU), and broadcaster Ricky Horton (Virginia).

TOP PROSPECTS: According to recent prospect ranking updates, both the Cardinals and Reds currently boast two of the top prospects across all of baseball … MLB Pipeline has outfielder Jordan Walker ranked No. 1, while SS Elly De La Cruz is No. 4 … Baseball America has De La Cruz as MLB’s top prospect while Walker is No. 6.

  • Allowed a pair of runs in a no-decision on 5/28 at Progressive Field as Cleveland scored two in the bottom of the 9th, handing the Cardinals a 4-3 walk-off loss.
  • Allowed just two home runs in his first seven starts and back-to-back games with two home runs each at CHI (5/10) and vs. MIL (5/16). His streak of four straight starts with a home run (5/5-22) was the 3rd-longest of his career.
  • Prior to his 5/10 start at Wrigley, he’d allowed just one earned run in three road games this season, fanning 22 in 19.2 IP. In nine career road starts with St. Louis, he’s allowed one or fewer earned runs in five of those games.
