ABOUT THE A’S: The A’s snapped their eight-game losing streak last night and are now 5-9 over the last 14 games…are 14-21 (.400) over the last 35 games dating back to June 6 after going 12-50 (.194) over the first 62 contests…are 26-71 (.268) overall, which is the lowest winning percentage in the majors behind the Royals (28-68, .292)…the last two Major League teams to finish with a winning percentage under .290 are the 2003 Tigers (43-119, .265) and 1962 Mets (40-120, .250)…were swept by the Twins to open the homestand and have been swept 13 times, which matches the season total from last year…have one sweep this season…are 5-7-1 over the last 13 series after going 1-16 over the first 17.
OFFENSE: The A’s are batting .236 (110-for-467) with 61 runs scored over the last 14 games (4.4 runs per game)…however, rank last in the majors with a .221 batting average and 347 runs scored overall…also rank last in the majors in slugging (.355), OPS (.654) and extra base hits (234), tied for second in fewest doubles (129) and most times shut out (11), third in lowest on-base percentage (.299) and most strikeouts (903) and tied for sixth in fewest home runs (90)…are tied for second in sacrifice hits (18) and tied for third in hit by pitches (53).
IN THE PINCH: A’s pinch hitters are 25-for-94 (.266) with four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and 10 walks…lead the majors in hits, are tied for third in plate appearances (105), tied for fourth in doubles and extra base hits (6), tied for seventh in walks, tied for ninth in home runs and tied for 10th in RBI.
PITCHING: The A’s tossed their second shutout of the season last night, which is tied with the Red Sox and Phillies for the fewest in the majors…both of the shutouts have come over the last 11 games (also July 4 at Detroit), but the A’s have a 5.63 ERA (60 er in 96.0 ip) over that span…have a 6.02 ERA overall, which is the highest in the majors…the highest ERA in Athletics history is 6.07 in 1936…the last team to finish the year with an ERA above 6.00 is the 1999 Rockies (6.03)…also have the highest opponents on-base percentage in the majors this year (.360), the second highest slugging percentage (.466) and OPS (.826) and third highest batting average (.272)…lead the majors in most walks (418) and hit batters (62), are tied for the lead in wild pitches (44), tied for second in most home runs (135) and rank eighth in fewest strikeouts (773)…are the only team without a balk.
