ROSTER MOVES: The D-backs acquired RHP Paul Sewald from the Mariners for INF Josh Rojas, OF Dominic Canzone and INF Ryan Bliss…in corresponding moves, the D-backs recalled OF Kyle Lewis (No. 1) and INF Diego Castillo (No. 64) from Triple-A Reno.

♦ Sewald (pronounced SEE-wald) will wear No. 38 for the D-backs…in 45 appearances for the Mariners this year, was 3-1 with a career-high 21 saves, a 2.93 ERA (14 ER in 43.0 IP), .196 opponent average (30- for-153), 14 walks and 60 strikeouts…since 2021, his 236 strikeouts are fourth and his 52 saves are 15th in the Majors.
IN THE WEST: The D-backs are third in the NL West, 2.0 games behind the Giants and 4.0 games behind the Dodgers.

TODAY’S GAME: The Giants host Arizona this evening for the first of four at home…the four-game set wraps up SF’s longest homestand of 2023 in which SF is 4-1 after sweeping the A’s in two games (Tuesday-Wednesday) and taking two of three against the Red Sox this weekend…four of the five games have been decided by one run.

ROSTER MOVES: The Giants made a trade today, with OF AJ Pollock and IF Mark Mathias joining the SF organization along with cash considerations from the Mariners in exchange for a PTBNL or cash considerations…Mathias has been optioned to Triple-A…SF also transferred RHP John Brebbia (right lat strain) to the 60-day IL, placed OF Mike Yastrzemski (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day IL and recalled IF Isan Díaz (#10) from Triple-A Sacramento

RIGHT AT HOME: SF has won six of its last seven, and seven of its last nine games at Oracle Park…if you look further back, the Giants are 13-6 (.684) over their last 19 games here at home… since June 11, SF’s .684 winning percentage at home is second-best in MLB behind only the Braves (15-5, .750)…Oracle Park will host 10 of SF’s next 15 games.

ACHILLES HEEL: The Giants have either won or split each of their last nine home series against Arizona dating to 2020…this year, however, SF is 3-4 against Arizona overall…their performance is partly due to their bullpen struggles, as SF relievers allowed 23 runs (22 earned) over 25.2 innings in seven games (7.71 ERA).

THE COMEBACK KIDS: SF won another game in walk-off fashion in yesterday’s 11-inning battle against the Red Sox…the victory marked the Giants’ second time with consecutive walkoff victories this season after also walking off in two straight against the Padres on June 19-20…yesterday was also SF’s 27th comeback win of the season, tied with Arizona for the third-most such victories in the NL behind the Reds (35) and Braves (30).

LET’S CALL IT A JOC-OFF: OF Joc Pederson’s recorded his second walk-off RBI of the season yesterday with a single in the 11th to drive in C Patrick Bailey…Pederson, who drew a bases-loaded walk on June 20 to give SF the walk-off win, is slashing .419/.537/.710 in close-and-late situations this year…his 1.246 OPS in that split is tops in the NL and fourth-best in MLB, while his .573 OBP is second-best in the Majors.

THE SECRET SAUCE: Bailey drove in the tying run in the 8th inning yesterday, eventually taking the Giants to extras…SF improved to 18-1 in games where Bailey has at least one RBI since his debut on May 19…in that same span, the Giants are 19-2 when OF Michael Conforto knocks in a run (Stats, LLC).

JULY JAMS: Another multi-hit effort yesterday pushed IF Wilmer Flores’ average to .395 (30×76) in July with 11 runs scored, five homers, 10 RBI and a 1.124 OPS (22g)…the .395 average is second-best in July behind and CHC’s Cody Bellinger (.406)

NO FREE PASSES: Giants’ pitchers have struck out 7.29 hitters for every walk they’ve issued at home in July…according to Stats, LLC, this is one of the best rates by any team at home in a single month in the Modern Era (since 1901)…SF’s next-highest K/BB rate at home in any month is 5.23 in May 1968.

THE MORE, THE MERRIER: When IF Marco Luciano made his debut last Wednesday he became the 31st hitter to appear in a game for the Giants this season…according to Stats, LLC, SF’s 31 different position players this year are most in the Majors.

RIGHTING THE SHIP: The Giants’ four wins in their last five games comes on the heels of a season-worst six-game losing skid…SF has scored just three runs or fewer 15 times in 24 July games (62.5%) and more recently in nine of their last 11 games dating to July 19 at Cincinnati…the Giants’ .639 OPS this month is lowest in the Majors as are their 3.33 runs-per-game…below is the Giants offense by month breakdown with MLB rankings in parentheses.
