The Minnesota Twins have announced that utility player Willi Castro has been placed on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to April 21, due to a right oblique strain. Castro sustained the injury during the eighth inning of the April 16 game against the New York Mets.
Celebrating his 28th birthday today, Castro has played in 18 games this season, recording a .227 batting average (15-for-66) with six doubles, one home run, five RBIs, three walks, seven runs scored, and a .655 OPS.
In response, the Twins have recalled utility player Mickey Gasper from Triple-A St. Paul. Gasper, who began the season on Minnesota’s Opening Day roster, was optioned to St. Paul on April 18. During his stint with the Saints, he appeared in four games, posting a .333 batting average (4-for-12) with one double, two home runs, three RBIs, three walks, one stolen base, and five runs scored.
Additionally, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher David Festa to St. Paul. Festa, who was called up on April 11, made three starts for the Twins, compiling a stellar 1.38 ERA across 13 innings pitched (2 earned runs). He also logged five walks, 15 strikeouts, and a 1.31 WHIP.
For today’s game against the Chicago White Sox, the Twins will operate with 25 players on the roster. A corresponding move to fill the 26-man roster spot is expected to be announced ahead of tomorrow night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
