Miami Marlins sign two-time All-Star and 2015 World Series champion right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today signed right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto to a one-year contract, with a club option for 2024. Cueto is a two-time All-Star, in 2014 with Cincinnati and 2016 with San Francisco, and won a World Series championship with Kansas City in 2015. He finished second in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2014.

Cueto, 36, made 25 appearances (24 starts) with the Chicago White Sox in 2022, going 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA (158.1 IP/59 ER). The 15-year veteran tossed at least 6.0 innings in 19 of his 24 starts, including four starts of 8.0 innings or more and tossed a complete game on Aug. 4 at Texas – his first since 2016. He posted a 3.5 WAR (wins above replacement) for the Sox.

Cueto has pitched to a 3.44 ERA and a 143-107 record in 355 career appearances (353 starts) across the big leagues with the Cincinnati Reds (2008-15), Kansas City Royals (2015), San Francisco Giants (2016-21), and the Chicago White Sox (2022). He stands as the last pitcher to throw a complete game in the World Series, doing so for the 2015 Kansas City Royals in Game 2 of their championship season.

Born in San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic, Cueto has posted the third-lowest ERA for a Dominican pitcher (min. 300 starts), behind only Juan Marichal (2.89) and Pedro Martinez (2.93). He led the Majors in strikeouts (243) and innings pitched (243.2) during the 2014 season. Among all active pitchers, he ranks sixth in innings pitched (2,192.2), seventh in wins (143), and 10th in strikeouts (1,812).

As a corresponding move, Miami has designated for assignment LHP Daniel Castano.

The Marlins begin the 2023 regular season on Thursday, March 30, facing the New York Mets at 4:10 p.m. on Opening Day at loanDepot park. Fans can secure their seats now to catch Marlins Baseball this season at Marlins.com/Tickets.
