Miami Marlins acquire Right-handed reliver David Robertson from New York Mets

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired 2009 World Series Champion and 2011 American League All-Star reliever David Robertson from the New York Mets in exchange for Minor League prospects C Ronald Hernández and INF Marco Vargas.

Robertson, 38, has gone 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA (44.0 IP/10 ER) in 40 relief appearances with the Mets this season, recording 14 saves in 17 opportunities. He has held opponents to a .199 average and boasts a 1.00 WHIP.

Across 771 career games (one start) in the Majors, he has a 61-38 record and a 2.84 ERA, with 171 saves. He has struck out 1025 batters compared to just 318 walks. He owns 40 MLB Postseason appearances, second-most among active players, trailing only Kenley Jansen. Additionally, he is 6-0 to start his Postseason career, joining only six other pitchers in MLB history; Orlando Hernandez (8-0), Orel Herschiser (7-0), Cliff Lee (7-0), Lefty Gomez (6-0), Livan Hernandez (6-0) and Mariano Rivera (6-0).

Roberston became a World Series Champion in 2009 with the New York Yankess, and was named an American League All-Star in 2011. During his All-Star campaign, he led AL relievers with a 1.08 ERA (8 ER/66.2 IP) and 100 strikeouts. The reliver was a member of Team USA during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, recording two saves and winning a silver medal. Also in 2017, Robertson appeared in the World Baseball Classic and winning the championship with Team USA. During the tournament, which included games at loanDepot park, he posted a 2.45 ERA (1 ER/3.2 IP) in 5 games.

The native of Birmingham, Alabama, was selected in the 17th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees out of the University of Alabama. The signing scouts from the Yankees for Robertson were Jeff Patterson and DJ Svihlik, who is now the Marlins Senior Director of Amateur Scouting.

To make room for Robertson on the 40-man roster, the Marlins have transferred RHP Matt Barnes to the 60-day Injured List.
