KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Current have selected three players in the 2024 NWSL Draft, the first for head coach Vlatko Andonovski since being appointed the team’s head coach and the second for general manager Camille Ashton. Defender Ellie Wheeler from Penn State, goalkeeper Halle Mackiewicz from Clemson and goalkeeper Hope Hisey from Arizona.
“We’re very excited about the players we were able to add tonight,” said Andonovski. “We knew who and what we wanted coming into tonight’s draft. Picking up Ellie (Wheeler) and the two goalkeepers made tonight a great night for the Current.”
“We’re excited about the roster we have coming into the 2024 season,” said general manager Camille Ashton. “Tonight’s draft was a great step towards building what we feel will be a very competitive team going forward.”
Ellie Wheeler – DEF, Penn State University
Wheeler is a strong defender who was a four-year starter for Penn State. She was the Nittany Lions Freshman of the Year and Defensive MVP and helped her side win the 2022 Big 10 Championship. Internationally, she also has experience with the U.S. Youth National Teams at the U-19, U20 and U-23 levels.
Halle Mackiewicz – GK, Clemson University
Mackiewicz played 48 games for the Clemson Tigers. In four years, she posted a 0.923 goals against average. Her senior season saw her post a 0.726 goals against average, record a school all-time record with 13 shutouts and earn the 2023 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Hope Hisey – GK, University of Arizona
Hisey, who trained with the Current during the 2023 season and played for the Current II development team, set the record for career saves (366) and games started (88) at the University of Arizona. She was All Pac-12 Third Team in 2022 and All Pac-12 Freshman Team in 2019.
